...I also think that so many albums are from her early years...so how can you judge them against the later ones fairly. ... Excellent point, Larry. Hayley's earlier albums are hard to beat because she was so fresh and original sounding. Thankfully, her younger voice was recorded in its prime and we will always have "My Gift To You" and "Pure" to look back upon with delight.

Umm, and "Hayley Westenra". Were you not delighted by that album?

I went for River of Dreams, but to be more specific
2 CD NEW ZEALAND EDITION
It is a great album to introduce new listeners to Hayley's music and it has Majesty on it, which alone should be up there for a lifetime achievement award or at least a few gold stars.

I went for River of Dream.... I'm sorry but "River of Dreams" is cheating for me because it contains songs from multiple sources. An "album" should be defined as a self-contained, original release, such as "Pure" or "Paradiso". Obviously a "greatest hits" release defeats the purpose of picking a favourite!

No it doesn't, Steve. Just because the songs happened to have been on a "real" album first, doesn't mean a person doesn't like the combination of songs better than what was on the original album (or version of the album). But if you think that way, Steve, you should remove the Japanese Pops Best album from the poll, since that will have repeats from the first 2 Jap. albums. I'm pretty sure it will not fit the standards you just described. My favorite songs of Hayley's are on several different albums; if they were all compiled on one best of album, I might consider it my favorite Hayley CD to play. But then, I do have a lot of favorites. Anyway, if RoD could be nominated for best album at the CBA, that means it's still an album, and people can pick it as their favorite if they want to. The fact that it has new songs on it makes it a different album.

I did once make myself a CD of my favourite Hayley tracks. It is rather different from ROD, although there are some songs that are a must for any such album like Pokarekare Ana and Amazing Grace. Also, my version has quite a few of her Japanese songs on it too, probably half the album is taken from her various Japanese releases (including both "Listen to the Wind" and "On the Wings of Time"). It also predates Paradiso, so I'll probably have to do it again some day.

Actually, I would have a hard time compiling a CD like that, because I do like so many.

Yes, it was hard, as I limited the number of tracks.ton12 plus a bonus track. That meant I had to weed a lot of good tracks out from a much longer list. And they are roughly in the order of recording. If you are interested, they are
Pure 1 Pokarekare Ana 2. Benedictus 3. Amazing Grace
Odyssey 4. Never Saw Blue 5. Quanta Qualia 6. O Mio Babbino Caro
Treasure 7. Abide with Me
Prayer 8. Listen to the Wind
HSJS 9. Snowflower 10. Hana 11. I Beleive
Winter Magic 12. On the Wings of Time
13. Bonus track - Eternal Flame (from WITA)
In fact it may now be impossible and I would have to increase the number of tracks. As it is there is nothing from HSJS2, which I love.

I find it impossible to pick a favorite album of Hayley's. I have most all of her albums and there is a song on every album I consider one of my favorites. I also think that so many albums are from her early years...so how can you judge them against the later ones fairly. Larry Hi Larry, Yes that's certainly true - and in the case of the very early ones, the budgets used to create Hayley Westenra and My Gift to You compared to say, Pure, were vastly different. My favourite is Paradiso and that's probably because it's a diverse album which shows many facets of Hayley's voice and differing emotions. It's also a piece of work which is a whole. Rather than a collection of songs on a cd. I like albums which paint a consistent picture and I think that the tracks on Paradiso are well linked and within the one theme. Cheers, Jillian

Martin, you don't have any Paradiso songs on it, either. You'll just have to make another one with Paradiso and HSJS songs, and add the ones you left out of the other one.

Yes, Libby, but I don't want to leave any of the others out to make room for the Paradiso tracks. The only solution will be to increase the number of tracks.

This wasn't my poll, Libby, so the most I can do is point out the flaw as I see it. If i were to create a poll for best album, I would ensure that the choices were among fully original albums, not compilations and mish-mash. That way we'd get a better sense of what phase of Hayley's recording career represents her strongest work.

Well, now I feel kind of bad for putting RoD on the poll. Didn't know it would cause this much controversy. But, I do still feel it was a major album for her. They even put it on her 10 year anniversary poster: Sorry for any controversy -Bama

Don't worry Bama. No problem. It is up to the voters whether they vote for it or not. You are simply letting the voters decide for themselves.
