I first saw Sissel on the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's Christmas concert on PBS in 2007. I thought her voice seemed kind of similar to Hayley's. Anyway, after watching some of her MTC performances, I looked her up on Wikipedia. I found a lot of similarities to Hayley. She listed Barbra Streisand and Kate Bush as some of her musical inspirations/influences.
She has sung Maori songs. Her conductor in the choir she sang with as a child was from New Zealand!
She performed in local talent competitions when she was young (did Hayley ever win one of hers?)
She is very popular in Japan, and even made Japanese versions of her albums! (Hayley should do this!)
She's one of her countries most popular singing stars.
She toured with the Lord of the Rings symphony. Hayley didn't tour, but she did do one concert in Dallas.
Sissel is signed to Universal (Norwegian Decca, I think)
She sang with Jose Carreras. Now for the things Hayley should do that Sissel has done: Sing for the MTC's Christmas concert.
Sing at an Olympic Games opening and/or closing ceremony.
Sing with Josh Groban.
Be nominated for a Grammy.

Hello Libby, Everything you ever wanted to know about Sissel can be found in this thread here: hwi.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=sissel&action=display&thread=1462Well a lot of it, anyway! Interestingly, according to the article in there, Sissel was 27 years old when she was invited to sing on the Titanic sound-track and much of her International success happened after that (with her performance at the the Winter Olympics a couple years earlier www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIrU4Etac8w ). There's still plenty of time left for Hayley to make her (even bigger!) mark. Cheers, Dave

Sissel Kyrkjebø and Hayley Westenra have the exact same number of letters in their first and last names respectively (6 & 8). But how on earth do you pronounce "Kyrkjebø"? Smart move going by one name, Sissel.

Oh, yeah, that was another thing I meant to include in the things Hayley should do, that Sissel has done. Sing for a huge blockbuster movie!! And hopefully that will happen. But, my worry now, since Howard Shore has also worked with Sissel in the LOTR symphonies, he might choose her instead. But, they have similar voices, and Hayley is from New Zealand, plus all the other great things about Hayley's voice that I described to Peter Jackson. Hopefully PJ will be biased towards Hayley, the Kiwi singer. i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif And we all know the director makes the final decision, as we found out with The New World. But PJ seems like he would respect HS's opinions. HS earned them Oscars before, and he can certainly do it again (with Hayley, of course!).

There are sounds in that name you don't really find in english - but Swedish is near enough to Norwegian to make a good guess "Kierkyayburr" is probably as near as you can get. Martin D

Martin D You can hear how it should be pronounced right at the beginning of this video if you're intrested: www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTDmrxILvRAIt's not very easy to pronounce, even for me as a Swede... Btw, I would like Hayley and Sissel to do a duet together - that would really be something!

You know what, Hayley does not duet with other lady singers very often. Of course there was Celtic Woman, Meav in particular. But other than that, the only ones I can recall are, Sophie, Dame Malvina Major, and Katherine Jenkins. But nobody very famous (other than CW). The one with KJ was just on a talk show when they did some cooking together. Are duets with other lady singers just not done very often? Oh, and don't let me forget the impromptu duet with Dame Vera Lynn!

Hi Libby,
I've heard her duet with Katherine Jenkins live. A long time ago it is true. And I can't even remember what they sang, but it happened. Perhaps someone else can remember 2004 better than I.

Hi Martin D, Libby and everyone,
Katherine joined in Hine e Hine with Hayley and the rest of the cast (including Sophie and Isaac) during the Pure Tour in the UK in early 2004!
Cheers, Dave

KJ and Hayley performed Hine e Hine together at Joe's Pub in New York in 2004 (a review of which can be found if you click HERE!).

Well, that's great, but I was looking for artists other than KJ. Yes, I did forget the Corrs, but that wasn't my favorite performance of hers. That was just one of the ladies from the Corrs, not the whole group, wasn't it? I much prefer the version she did solo at one of her summer 2010 concerts. It was much better. Any others? And by that I mean other female artists.

Yes it's one of the ladies from the Corrs only, which is why it's a duet XD, I mentioned. lol Hayley doesn't do duets with female singers or rather other female singers don't duet with hayley often 'cause Hayley's voice is so perfect that any duet would be degrading for themselves XD

But KJ sounded OK with Hayley. Which says a lot about KJ. And the CW singers (especially Meav) were good with her too, although Hayley's quality always shone through on the CW recordings.
And this is getting horribly off topic. Fred drift....

Simba, you said "the Corrs", so that's why I mentioned it. The only time I've had the chance to hear KJ singing with Hayley was that cooking show I mentioned, singing Ave Maria. That was okay, but the main thing I remembered about KJ's performance was how she seemed to bask in her own singing, and that was a little annoying to me. Anyway, she's too yawny and operatic for me, so of course I like Hayley's part better.
