Looking back at a musical mixed bag

2011 was a mixed bag for New Zealand music. Fewer Kiwi acts charted high, compared with 2010, but a lot of homegrown acts found success abroad.
In 2011, local artists scored six No 1 albums, two No 1 singles, three fewer albums and two fewer singles than a year before - but about the same as in 2009.
The success story was a band that started out in a student flat at 660 Castle Street, Dunedin, a couple of years back and toured their way up and down the country to become 2011's bestselling local act.
Six60 tally a two-week No 1 self-titled platinum album and three top 10 singles: Rise Up 2.0 (No 1), Don't Forget Your Roots (No 2) and Only To Be (No 5).
Runner-up for homegrown newcomer is Auckland folk group Avalanche City. The tale began when Dave Baxter holed up in a community hall to record and play every instrument on his debut album Our New Life Above The Ground, which he released for free on the internet in 2010.
Only after TV2 picked up Love Love Love as one of their theme songs early last year, things started to fly and when the single was officially released in March it went straight to the top of the charts. Avalanche City's album has since earned gold status in New Zealand and Australia.
Melbourne-based singer Kimbra can also look back on a stellar 2011. Her album Vows debuted in the Top 10 on both sides of the Tasman and the 21-year-old from Hamilton won the Critics Choice Prize at the NZ Music Awards and an Aria Award for Best Female Artist. Her collaboration with Gotye on Somebody That I Used to Know peaked at No 1 in Australia, New Zealand, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Abroad, Wellington raised singer and songwriter Brooke Fraser got massive radio play with her cheery Something In The Water in England and through Europe and her album Flags debuted at No 6 in the German album charts, NZ On Air Music Manager Brendan Smith says.
Hip-hop star David Dallas made a buzz in the US with his latest album The Rose Tint. The artist who divides his time between New York and Auckland was signed by US label Duck Down Records and his album was downloaded more than 50,000 times online since it was released in May.
Auckland five-piece The Naked and Famous continued their successful ride in 2011. Their track Young Blood, was a Top 10 Alternative Radio Airplay song in America while the video to Young Blood clocked up more than 10 million views on YouTube. On top of that the catchy electro tune featured in a raft of TV channels' idents, shows and movie trailers.
Fraser and The Naked and Famous also did well on home terrain, taking home five New Zealand Music Awards each. Other big winners here included Tiki Taane and Ladi6.
Taane hit the headlines in April after being arrested in Tauranga for reciting an anti-police song by gangsta rap group N.W.A. when police entered the club he was performing at.
In the end the singer made peace with the boys in blue and even invited them to share the stage with him at the NZ Music Awards celebrations, which they declined. Instead he hired a couple of dancers dressed in police uniforms and shared his love with them.
Fellow Cantabrian, songstress Ladi6, who spent the European summer in Berlin, playing more than 50 shows all over the continent and in the UK, scored not only two Tuis this year but was also awarded the Taite Music Prize for the best album of 2010.
2011 marked the return of the Maori balladeer, as Patumahoe-based country singer Dennis March reached No 1 with his album Maori Songs in April and No 9 in the end of year album charts. Veteran performers Eddie Low and John Rowles also made it into the league of the most successful artists of the year, with albums charting at No. 15 and No. 20 for the year.
In May The Recording Industry Association of New Zealand (Rianz) announced Hayley Westenra's album Paradiso had broken the record for the local artist with the most No 1 albums to their name -- five, easing her clear of a three-way tie with the feelers and Split Enz.
Overall, Kiwis followed international trends in their choice of music: Like practically everywhere else, Adele dominated the local charts. Her album 21 was not only the bestselling album of the year, but set also a new longevity record, spending 26 non-consecutive weeks at the top, replacing Shania Twain's 1999 Come on Over, which managed 23 weeks at that top stop.
The longest running and biggest selling single was LMFAO's Party Rock Anthem which spent eleven weeks on the top of the charts.
This year also marked the 30th anniversary of music label Flying Nun Records. To commemorate the date music-store proprietor Roger Shepherd started releasing jangly tunes by bands like The Clean, The Verlaines and The Chills, the label put together a whole month of live shows, dubbed Nunvember, by old and new Nun signees.
Making ends meet isn't easy for a lot of artists at the best of times, but it was a particularly tough year for Christchurch's musicians with most venues destroyed by the devastating earthquake.
To create some cheer in dire times, bands like Lyttelton country outfit The Eastern took to the streets in the weeks after the disaster, bringing along their instruments to play on top of the liquefaction to a shaken community.
The same musicians teamed up a couple of weeks later with Delaney Davidson, Lindon Puffin, The Unfaithful Ways, The Tiny Lies, Al Park and Runaround Sue to recorded an album under the name Harbour Union and headed out on a tour to raise funds for hard hit artists.
International and local artists roped together to raise more than $2.5 million during the Rise Up Telethon for Christchurch in May. Celebrities, including Usher, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Anna Paquin, Neil Finn, Prince Edward, Robyn Malcolm, comedian Mike King and rugby league player Benji Marshall gave their support.
On the live music side of things, the year started off with a damp Big Day Out, headlined by heavy hitters Rammstein and Tool and the usual variety of winery tours, featuring artists like Brooke Fraser, Opshop and Midnight Youth.
The Foo Fighters visited Auckland twice, first for a one-off charity gig for the earthquake relief fund that raised more than $350,000 and again this December when they, according to concert-goers and geoscientists alike, rocked the city.
Other big names that played here include Bob Dylan, Meat Loaf, Alice Cooper, Kyuss, Katy Perry, Usher, Stone Temple Pilots, and Sir Elton John, who was the first to rock Dunedin's new Forsyth Barr Stadium.
For the new year, the excitement about upcoming shows is still a bit muted after the line-up of the Big Day Out 2012 failed to excite many festival goers. But there's also Wellington's Homegrown festival, Hamilton's Parachutue, Laneways in Auckland, Splore and Taranaki's Womad to look forward to.
For those who rock, 2012, could still become an exciting year, starting off with indie darlings Fleet Foxes, Death Cab for Cutie, Bon Iver and Ryan Adams, followed by some veterans such as Pink Floyd's Waters, Roxette and Melissa Etheridge and major international acts like Taylor Swift, Jessie J and Florence and the Machine.
