RAK Records and RAK StudiosA great time for nostalgia, the Christmas holidays, I'm missing 7 inch vinyl and the sound of a compliant stylus settling into the groove, the occasional click and pop of dust and light scratches in the vinyl and the bass that you really only got from a 45 RPM single, all the better if it was a 12 inch one. Through big amps and speakers, loud with gut thumping bass. I'm missing new releases from people like Smokie, Hot Chocolate, Cozy Powell, Suzi Quatro, Racey, Kim Wilde, The Animals and Adrian Gurvitz. It was all about the music, plain paper sleeves, no photos, no distraction from the main event, The music. There was just something special about RAK records, Maybe it was the hand and ear of Mickie Most, There was a lovely tightness of bass, very little audible distortion in the recordings, In any frequency, songs like I'll meet you at midnight by Smokie or A Child's Prayer by Hot Chocolate, still sound great. I just found out that Mumford & Sons recorded at the RAK Studios recently, Sigh no More an album I have been playing for over a year or so is one of Hayley's recent "Listening to" band mentions.
