Nut Point Centre Sunday 11th December 4pm
Fiona held a concert for the release of her new album Feeling with her band.
There was a new member of the band just for this concert, Doug Brush, and he is a percussionist (very good one too).
The venue is in the countryside to the west of Christchurch and is an Art Gallery converted from a farm shed. A full house of about 80 was present including our member John who was videoing the concert (so hopefully will appear on Fiona's website soon.
Fiona appearred in a White/Black patterned frock with knee high red boots (no bare feet today lol).
Fiona opened the show with a song I haven't heard before called My Pal The Gypsy by Mon Pot' Le Gitan and it was wonderful with Mike on the Guitar and Doug on his different percussion instruments. In fact we all loved what Doug was doing with the subtle sounds he could create plus the different types of hand drumming. One which fascinated us was the Spring Drum which is a hollow cylinder with a slinky spring hanging from it and it could create a thunder sound etc.
The Fiona played the title song of the new album, Feeling, which was very beautiful and lasted over seven minutes.
This was followed immediately by Tangissimo.
Another new song appropriate to Christchurch after the earthquake was Calm After The Storm.
James a title with no meaning lol was also lovely and quite poppy.
Mr. Barnaby Jackson, about Fiona's dog, was very lively.
Them There Eyes was very swingy.
At the interval we could have tea and snacks which was greatly appreciated.
House By The Harbour is one of my favourite songs also quite long.
This Land followed by Memories Of Martin and Mary were very Irish.
Coming Home is almost classical (that is how Fiona classified it lol) and is also on the new album.
Fire In The Orient about the Pool Hall in the red light district of Tokyo.
The highlight of the show was the Cathedral Tango with all the band having a part to play but Doug was the highlight with his percussing.
Czardas was excellent, very fast.
A new song on the album was Pizzicato Rumba and like the title suggests a lot of plucking of the strings.
After enthusiastic applause Fiona and the band came back on stage and Fiona said we could have one of two songs for the encore. So naturally we asked for both lol.
First one was Sunrise, Sunset from Fiddler On The Roof and then a swing version of Dark Eyes.
We gave Fiona a standing ovation and I think we almost overwhelmed poor Fiona lol.
It was great to catch up with Fiona and Ian. Ian said Fiona will be playing at the Classical Sparks concert in Christchurch next February which is great news. Up to 100000 people attend this free concert.
Here is the album
1. Pizzicato Rumba
2. Feeling
3. Mr. Barnaby Jackson
4. Fi's Irish Overture
5. Them There Eyes
6. Cathedral Tango
7. Calm Before the Storm
8. James
9. Theatre Royal Overture
10. Fire In the Orient
11. Coming Home
12. This Land
13. Czardas
