OPERA singer Elgan Llyr Thomas is looking forward to a busy summer, thanks to a helping hand from Bryn Terfel. But before he heads off on professional engagements around the UK, there’s an performance a little closer to home – Conwy Classical Musical Festival.
There’s a host of concerts lined up for the event, which is centred around St Mary’s Church this month.
Unusually organisers don’t charge admission fees, but simply ask the audience for donations.
Elgan, from Craig y Don, won last year’s £4,000 Bryn Terfel Scholarship prize, with his performance of hits from musicals following a master class with X Factor finalist Rhydian Roberts. He’d qualified for the final with his Urdd Eisteddfod win in the 19- 25 category for a song from the musicals.
The 20-year-old, now a student at the Royal Northern College of Music, said: “It’s opened up so many doors for me.
“I performed on his show at Christmas, I sang at the opening of the Urdd with John Owen Jones, I’ve a concert with Maelgwn Male Voice Voice choir, I will be singing a duet with Ruthie Henshall in Wrexham, and I am supporting Hayley Westenra at Venue Cymru in autumn.”
