Nottingham's revamped Old Market Square is to be officially opened by Princess Anne, it has been announced. The Princess Royal will unveil a plaque to commemorate the £7m redevelopment of the Square on 3 April. The revamp has seen the Square levelled out with granite paving slabs and seating areas and flowerbeds added. The city council is holding two weekends of celebrations in March, including a live music concert, to mark the opening of the redesigned Square. The new Square's first slab was laid by New Zealand singer Hayley Westenra in April 2006.

It's nice to see Hayley doing something constructive for a change. Nearly everything else she's done has been very destructive: She has broken records, has torn down musical barriers, has given smashing performances, has always stunned her audiences and has clobbered the competition. And if that weren't enough, she's also seeking to knock out global warming and drop thousands of bicycles on Ghana!
