:2fun: A thread on body orifices In particular the nasal cavity. I have not yet seen a discussion on this subject in relation to Hayley's unique sound. I thought some of our singing members might have brought the subject up. There is a track on the Live in New Zealand DVD which demonstrates this perfectly, where Hayley is humming with her mouth closed. so I did a bit of "Googling" A quote from SINGER ANATOMYThe nasal cavity – The nasal cavity is just one of the cavities in your body that contributes to your original sound as a singer. It is a space behind the nose and you can play with this area as you sing and decide if you like the sound emanating from the nasal cavity or if you’d rather sing more from your mouth producing a different sound. I won't mention Ronan Keating in relation to this subject

Martin Hi Martin, You got me there for a moment, then I tried it, It can be done by forcing more of the sound to come from the nose and letting little air flow from the mouth. As a kid in school I was constantly getting walloped on the back of the head for humming in class, Often I was not even consciously aware that I was doing it. One time a teacher slapped me on the back of the head and an earpiece popped out of my ear, which he mistook for a hearing aid, He apologised profusely, He had been talking to me from behind and I obviously did not hear him, so he assumed I was just not paying attention. I let him apologise away. Why should I tell him I had been listening to the top ten on my tiny Sinclair home assembled radio It was right in the middle of Roger Whittaker singing Mammy Blue to put an approximate date on it, funny the things you remember.

Nasal singing is normally discouraged, at least it was in my choir classes. But my choir teacher pointed out that singers like Britney Spears and some country singers sing sort of nasally sometimes. My dad has always said Willie Nelson sings through his nose. So, singing through your nose can be accepted for certain genres, and if you're good-looking (allegedly), but it is not proper singing technique. BTW, I can't think of which song Hayley hums on the Live DVD.

Oh, I thought her mouth was open in that song, at least what I've heard of it. I admit, that's one song I rarely listen to. For one thing, I don't have it on CD. When I first ordered Odyssey, on her website it said the song was on the US version, but I got You Are Water instead, which I was much, much happier with.

It is on the UK version of Odyssey. Not my favourite though. You are Water (which I love) I only have on Prayer from Japan.
