my fiance brought up something interesting to me that i am actually curious about... seeing how i have never seen Hayley in concert or in person...and since many here have...i was wondering...has there ever been a time where Hayley has "messed up" on a song during a concert or any of her many performances? i use the term "messed up" loosely since everyone has a different view or meaning of that term... this is more just a curiosity of mine...i am not saying or trying to mean anything derogatory towards Hayley...so please dont hate me

Well, there was the most recent one at Barbican, where Hayley forgot the lyrics to River, and then Juliette helped her remember them! We have it on video, too! I know there are other funny instances like that, but I can't remember them all in detail at the top of my head. I'm sure the concert goers who were present at those times can provide you with more.

At the last Songs of Praise 'Big Sing' which was broadcast on 26th September, Hayley came in too soon on 'The Twelve Days of Christmas'. We had to start all over again. Luckily it was only verse 2.

Hayley once forgot the words of "Abide With Me" when she was singing it on live TV, but she improvised very professionally and got away with it. Richard

I've seen her 'mess up" twice. Once at the Barbican - she forgot the lyrics to River. Another time was at Hampton Pool - she was performing an original song she hasn't recorded yet (I've forgotten what it was called... 'Talk To Me'?) She completely messed up the piano to the extent she stopped and started again.
Both occassions she recovered very, very well.
I haven't heard her missing notes or going out of tune though. Never.

As are we all, but the most noticeable thing with Hayley is that she won't ignore a mistake or try to hide it - she might make a joke about it afterwards or, as has already been said, she'll start again, but she'll never pretend it didn't happen. I admire her for that. Best wishes Grant

Oh, and then there was the time she got her skirt of her "Celtic green" dress caught under the piano seat. I think that was at Kerikeri in New Zealand, 2008. Graeme was there. I think ever after she has mostly opted to wear dresses with shorter skirts when she plays the piano on stage. One exception I'm remembering is Buxton 2008, where she wore her coral/orange/pink -ish dress to play Sonny.

At Peterborough Cathedral on her "Winter Magic" cathedral tour she got lost in the middle of "Sleigh Ride". I think she was concentrating too much on playing the sleigh bells, and that is the reason, she said on last year's "Christmas Wishes" Tour, that she was delegating the sleigh bell playing to her drummer.

This thread is fun but disturbing. Why are we spotlighting Hayley's minor flaws in a public forum? Has anyone considered the implications? What if this means that now she's going to become extra self-conscious? What if this leads to even more "bloopers"? How can we avoid the mindset of: "Hey, this is going to be fun catching her in yet another trivial mistake!" No, we're not exactly poking fun at her, but these things have a way of adding up.
Trouble is, even though Hayley can laugh at her imperfections, she never expected anyone to collect them on a list. And that list will certainly grow because if the expectation of bloopers is raised, so will the occurrences be. The self-deprecating laughter will become part of the act and we will ultimately be disappointed when she has the nerve to pull off an impeccable performance — not with her, but with ourselves for not discerning what tiny thing might have gone wrong.

Hi everyone, We've been discussing this among the staff since yesterday (the time zones slow us down a bit) and I think we pretty well agree with Steve MacDonald's viewpoint, so the thread will remain locked. Thanks also to spiderman for his comments made privately. Yes it was fun while it lasted, but the thing that strikes me is that out of many hundreds of live performances over the years, members could only come up with half about a dozen of them (and I don't really count prerecordings for TV or radio in front of an audience, because re-takes are normal in that environment). When glitches do occasionally occur, they are all part of the attraction of live performance - quite the opposite of the sterile world of pre-recorded and/or auto-tuned "perfect" vocals that sadly, are all too prevalent among many popular singers and which really ought to be restricted to commercially released CDs etc. If anyone wants to pick up on that aspect, there are I am sure suitable threads already in the forum, I think it's been discussed before. What you get with Hayley is the real thing, a truly live performance - along with all its attendant risks, and thank goodness for that! Dave
