Hi Dave and everyone else, I've just watched this clip via the 'HWI' Videoplayer (thanks Dave!) for the first time... I know I seem to be a bit behind (well 2 days at least!) but I'm going to blame the huge volume of University work which I am sifting through at the moment. Hayley's performance was of 'Santa Lucia' on GMTV was exemplary... She really "sold" that song to me and everybody else I'm sure!!! (no question marks required! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif ) What's more she sailed through the preceding interview with ease too! Andrew

Thanks for your scientific research, Professor Dave! I would like to add that it takes a lot of experience to be able to mime convincingly, and Hayley simply hasn't had enough practice to do it successfully! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifGreat live performance, Hayley! Best Wishes, Richard

Hi All Just to throw the cat amongst the pigeons I'm not convinced it was truly live. I think it may well have been recorded at an earlier time specifically for GMTV's broadcast, quite possibly the day before. Yes, it was then expertly mimed by Hayley and why not? It is imperative as part of the overall Treasure promotional campaign that every performance is faultless and to sing live at such an early time of day must be very demanding on the vocal chords. One clue I picked up on was the delivery of the very last note which requires the note to fluctuate (perhaps someone can enlighten me on the technical word for this?). I always thought it required movement of the tongue to create this affect but in this performance it was absolutely stationary. Also, another small clue is the absence of the other musical accompanists as I see no reason for not having them on set? I could of course be talking a load of nonsense! . In which case I will gladly eat humble pie on Saturday!! Martin

Hello Martin! I'm afraid I can't answer you simply because there are so many things about this performance it that convince me that Hayley was singing "live". But let's clear one thing up straight away - we are not talking about the backing - that may have been mostly, partly or not at all "live". Hayley often has to use pre-recorded backing tracks but rarely mimes on "live" TV shows, not even at breakfast time! I'd better number the points. 1. Vibrato: Good singers usually produce it in the throat not with the tongue mouth or jaw and I am sure Hayley produces hers in the throat. Some singers do use tongue or jaw wobble but not "our Hayley". If you want to know more, you can read this interesting article.. 2. Lip sync: Hayley's face and mouth were in clear view as she sang, for 1 minute 40 seconds in all and nobody - yes I mean nobody can mime a fast tempo song like this with lots of lip movement and be in vision for that long without any visible loss of synchronization not even for a moment. I'd say it's impossible. 3. Why would Hayley want to record it in advance then mime to it during the actual performance? She (and we) already know she can do this "live" and there are many such examples available at HWI. She also does this at almost every concert she's ever given! 4. The programme presenters said it was going to be live; if it wasn't going to be live, they wouldn't have said that. 5. Sound wave analysis: In the example I gave earlier in the thread, if you look closely, Hayley moves her mouth slightly closer to the microphone a moment before she sang "vento" and this resulted in the slightly louder sound that I mentioned. When she sung the same note one verse later, at 2m 8s, she did not move closer to the mic and the loudness measures at about 1.4 decibels quieter. This may not sound much - but digital TV broadcasts compress the audio and the actual dynamic change at the studio mixing desk would have been significantly more than 1.4 decibels. So far, I have seen and heard nothing whatsoever to even make me suspect that it wasn't sung "live" by Hayley (and I always look out for miming on TV!) If anyone has seen anything that I've missed or got wrong, please post here! Is there a singer in the house? Cheers, Dave

In vibrato, tremolo etc a superb, easily readable and highly informative post, Dave. Thank you for a fine contribuition to a deeper than general awareness. Until I read your post (plus its reference article) I thought I had a vague idea of the subject. Apparently I didn't know anything at all! Peter S

While I'm satisfied Hayley was singing live on the show, I still baffled as to why they didn't have a mandolinist on hand to complete the illusion that her accompaniment was also live. Is there a clause in the mandolin society's by-laws that forbids faux performances before noon-time?

Thanks very much to Dave for his exhaustive research. I can now absolutely confirm that the results of his checks are accurate. These are Steve Abbott's words to me this morning: And I hadn't even asked the question! Roger

Thanks for the video guys! I can buy that Hayley was singing live, and maybe the harpist was playing, but the guitar player needs to take some acting lessons!! (and needs to learn to comb his hair!)

I think she could sing any where any time she's just that good. Her bad day would be as good as most singers best.
