Well, River of Dreams was supposed to be that. But was it? If you were to put together your own personal best of Hayley album, what would be on it? I have often thought about this myself, and to be honest, my own choices don't overlap too well with River of Dreams. Perhaps that is becuase I include all of Hayley's recorded work, and not just that released in the UK (or wherever).
Not that I don't like ROD, I do, enough to have bought two copies.
I needed to come up with some rules. So here they are. The album will consist of 12 tracks from her recorded catalogue, and both albums and DVDs can be included in that. Plus a bonus track.
The bonus track can literally be anything, but will be a new recording. It can be a new recording of a song she has recorded before, or a recording of something she has sung at a live performance but not recorded, or somethng else that you would like her to record.
It is good to try to be as diverse as possible, including all of Hayley's different singing styles if possible. I have always said that it is impossible to sum Hayley up in one song, but 12 plus a bonus gives us a better chance.
To start things off, here is my choice. It was surprisingly difficult to do. I had to eliminate some seriously good tracks.
1. Pokarekare Ana - her signature tune in ths part of the world
2. Dark Waltz - Fabulous song, almost her US signature tune I think
3. Amazing Grace - Her Far East signature tune
4. Never Saw Blue - Another wonderful song
5. Quanta Qualia - Who else in the world could do this? - fabulous.
6. O Mio Babino Caro - Everyone and his dog sings it, but nobody better than Hayley.
7. Abide with me - Just so moving
8. Listen to the Wind - A song written for Hayley by James Horner, the great film music composer. Much underrated in my opinion.
9. Snowflower - Just beautiful
10. Flower (Hana) from HSJS1 - Another beautiful song, brilliantly sung
11. I Believe - As a Christian I can't resist this
12 On the Wings of Time - far too short, a fabulous song.
Bonus Track - Eternal Flame. Hayley really should re-record this.
Notice I couldn't find room for anything at all from HSJS2, which is an album I love. Cosmos at least should be there, but no room. Sorry.
