Take this poll, please.
If you ran the record store, how would you merchandise Hayley's CDs? (assuming that record stores are not quite obsolete, of course!)

Haven't seen a shop with a "Classical Crossover section" yet, true that in Spain we are much less aware of the genre, but I honestly don't think there are many stores that have it in the UK either, am I wrong? Would be nice to hve a "Hayley section". But being realistic and taking in consideration my statement "Classical is not only Opera", I guess my best fit would be the Classical section, although I know it's very imperfect and many would argue. Actually, I think classifying Hayley, even putting her inside of Classical Crossover, would be more accurate, but rather imperfect too.

I'd put her in the Classical section, honestly. I don't think enough people really make a great distinction between Classical & Crossover, so two separate sections would only get confusing. I'd want people to be able to find her albums easily, after all.

Realistically, she'd be put in the classical or easy listening section (the latter depends on her how her later albums go, but without them, I'd say classical)
But I opted for the 'classical crossover' section in my fantasy world. No - there is no such section in record stores that I know of but if I ever run a record shop, it would probably all be classical crossover! (yes, there's enough albums to sustain a small record store!) <3

If it were my store she would have her own section. The primary motivation would be to make a living from it for sure, hard to do in this day and age when good record shops are closing down all the time, but the secondary one would be to promote my favourite artists, and Hayley is top of that list. So I would make a big splash for her, that no customer could miss. I would not try to classify her. I would import and sell her Japanese and NZ albums too, and the DVD. The section would include Hayley related stuff like West Side Story, The New World, Celtic Woman, Music of the Spheres, Hayley's NZ and Japansese albums etc, and there would be a lot of stuff not generally available in the UK. Oh, and Hayley's music would get played very regularly in the shop. My ambition would be to make sure nobody ever left my store without a clear idea of who Hayley is and what she sounds like. My store would attempt to push talented and litle known artists, rather than just the big names in the pop world, although those would be available for people that wanted them. But I would like to try to appeal to people who wanted to explore, rather than just follow the crowd.

Well, I'm quite sick of walking into music stores and having to search the entire store just to find out that they only hold one or two Hayley CDs (A nice thought is that maybe the rest were sold out! ). No one music store I have walked into, has put her music in the same genre as another store. For some she's under Easy Listening, others, under Classical, others still, World Music or even Pop. So I'd definitely give Hayley her own section in the store. Maybe not a huge section, because I don't think that's really what the market is looking for, but a very visible, eye-catching section for sure Having said that, I realise that physical CD sales have dropped like crazy, so maybe I'd branch into other things too. Like her biography/autobiography and posters. Maybe even Pure pens if I'd gotten permission from the Hayleystore. Haha I'd make it a one-stop paradise (sort of) for Hayley fans, so they won't have to run around from music stores to book stores to online stores like I did. I'd also make sure to stock this kind of stuff for the more 'popular' bands/artists though. I mean, something needs to get non-Hayley fans into my store too, right? cheers, Joanne P.S. I liked answering this question, Steve!

Oh yes, and my store would stock Winter Magic too, something most CD sellers in the UK have never done. And display it even in summer!

Every one I visited did stock Winter Magic. It just seemed to be the Supermarkets that didn't bother.

I wasn't going to touch this one but having seen some of the replies - particularly Martin's and Joanne's I've had second thoughts.
True, music stores have suffered in recent years with the fall in sales of CD's so, what is needed for new ones to succeed is a unique concept that provides a turnkey package for fans of specific artists.
Using Hayley as an example, she would have a dedicated section in the store that would have all her albums available at all times and hopefully a selection of promo's as well. Merchandise and memorabilia would play an important part too with posters, flyers, stickers from around the world available. A link with "Hayleystore" would be essential to ensure that 'official' merchandise was available or could, at least, be obtained for the customer.
I would hope too, to have a programme of "artist days" which would see every artist represented in the store coming into store at intervals to sign CDs and to meet fans in informal surroundings, against a published programme. Clearly this would be easier to manage with the lesser know/up and coming artists than it would for the likes of Hayley but would still attempt to get the 'big names' to come in.
Oh well, one can dream!
Best wishes Grant

Well, Borders didn't have it, nor did any of the specialist shops (I didn't expect them too, they dont spcialise in Classical Crossover), nor did any supermarkeys as you say. Rugby no longer has a record shop. In the end the only place was the big HMV in the centre of Leicester, where I bought my UK copy. That's probably the only place I could get it within 25 miles! But you have reminded me that our 'specialist' Hayley record stores must stock all versions of artists CD's. Thanks for that! Best wishes Grant

Very true Grant that thought occurred to me. So there would be extensive displays for all of Hayley's international albums as well, giving the customer the choice of all of the versions of Pure, Odyssey, Treasure/Celtic Treasure, Winter Magic/Christmans Magic etc.
Maybe even the odd original copy of WITA at an affordable price!
Now, what Hayley fan wouln't love a place like that!
