From the Cambridge Evening News Songbird's flying visitSensation Hayley Westenra was the special guest at an end- of-term school service at Ely Cathedral. The chart-topping songbird hails from New Zealand but popped up to Ely from her London home to help present prizes at the King's Junior School prizegiving event. The 19-year-old records on the same record label as The Choirboys - Ely's pintsize version of the Three Tenors - who reached the charts with their smash hit album last year. Ely Cathedral choristers Patrick Aspbury and CJ Porter-Thaw were reunited with the third member of The Choirboys, Ben Inman, a chorister at Southwell Minster in Nottinghamshire, to sing during the service. Tony Duncan, head of King's Junior School, said: "We were delighted Hayley accepted the invitation and her presence made our service of thanksgiving, at the end of a very eventful year, even more special than usual." Ely Cathedral is also breaking with 1,000 years of tradition to create its own girls' choir from September this year, a development Hayley found exciting. The girl choristers, aged 13-18, will all be pupils in King's Senior School. CJ's father, Neil Porter- Thaw, who is the director of music at the school, said: "Hayley was discovered busking in Christchurch, her home town in New Zealand, when she was a similar age to Patrick, CJ and Ben, so she was able to pass on her advice to all our talented children."

Hi Roger, Many thanks for sharing this News Article with us- what a lovely surprise! I worked in Cambridge for 4 months in 1995 (February - May) within Cambridge University (Faculty of Archaelogy and Anthropology Museum in Downing Street) as an Information Systems Analyst. There I carried out management and information auditing, with a view to converting a manual library card cataloguing system into an electronic version. The summer of 1995 was a scorcher! I have happy memories of days spent in Cambridge- punting, lying on the grass in Grantchester Meadows and trying to gatecrash May Balls! Unfortunately I didn't get around to visiting Ely Cathedral though. Regards, Andrew

Hi Andrew, you mention that the summer of 1995 was a scorcher. From what I have heard 2006 is also a bit of a scorcher too, with heatwaves all over the UK. So, my o'l mate keep cool if you can and enjoy the summer as we are experiencing a rather harsh very cold winter here in NZ at the moment,
Take care, Rodders Christchurch NZ

Hi Rodders, Great to hear from you! You are quite right re: the heatwave in the UK We've had a lot of thunderstorms over the last week and it's been really humid. I'm hoping it stays dry here on July 20th, when I go to see Hayley at Edinburgh Castle... Wrap up warm yourself... Homemade broth and baked bread might be in order Regards, Andrew

Hello again folks! This thread has drifted off topic, so I've come to the rescue! Ely Cathedral has something in common with another venue that Hayley knows well - Hampton Court. It has a maze, although it is only a pattern of stones set in the floor under the west tower. The length of the maze is equal to the height of the tower. Info thanks to this link:- www.geocities.com/mikesmazes/win-ely.htm?20068This forum can be very educational, even if it is the end of term! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif Richard

The photo of Hayley at the beginning of this thread, was that taken outside the Cathedrel, as the background looks as though it may have been? Also have a good night at Edinburgh Castle, lets know how it goes, cheers, Rodders

Hello Rodders and Andrew! I have visited Ely a few times, which is how I knew about the maze, so I am fairly certain that the photograph of Hayley in the article was taken outside Ely Cathedral. Although you can only see a small part of the building, the architecture is very distinctive! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifBest Wishes from London, Richard
