Hey everyone!
I wanted to let everyone know about something really neat that happens every year around the US, and even around the world. It's called Relay For Life, which is the biggest fundraising event for the American Cancer Society. People join teams to raise money for this event. And during Relay, which takes up to 24 hours, there are many different ceremonies, activities and a track to walk around for the entire time to symbolize the cancer that never sleeps.
People Relay for many different reasons. They Relay for themselves as someone who had or has cancer, for a relative, a friend, a neighbor. Most everyone has come in contact with cancer in some way or another. I personally Relay because my friend Claire had cancer and is a survivor. I also relay because both my Grandma Zita and Uncle BJ passed away from cancer, and for my neighbor Paul who is battling cancer as we speak.
My team from last year, Team LOVE, was the third highest fundraising team. We raised over $2,500 with only 7 people on our team. It was an amazing experience and this year we would love to reach that same amount or more. And as a University we raised one of the top amounts for the Northwest Indiana division.
This is a picture of what Relay looks like at my school.
As a part of Relay we make Luminaria bags for those we would like to honor their memory or celebrate their life. In a special ceremony called Luminaria we light the bags up around the track we walk around. At the same time we play music and read off the names of all those names on the bags around the track. It's incredibly moving. Here's a picture of the luminaria after the lighting ceremony.
