I am currently having a difficult conversation on Twitter with Libby about nodules (difficult because of the lack of space to expand explanations), so I thought I would move it here so people can share what they know about them, because I am no expert.
The subject came up when MartinDn commented on Sarah Brightman's inconsistency with her voice, and I conceded that since she developed nodules in 2003/2004 and had surgery to have them removed (I forget when) she has never been able to sing the same. She always sings in that baby voice and her operatic attempts now are quite gruesome. (listen if you dare: www.youtube.com/watch?v=16mBtuA0BbQ )
Other stars such as Russell Watson (who fully recovered) and Julie Andrews are also famous victims. Pavarotti, Freddy Mercury, Bonnie Tyler, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and the list is endless also developed them.
Thought I would bring it up more since in the limited space that I had to explain, I think I put across to Libby that nodules=end of career, but that's not the case. Some singers just sing with them - though they're likely to change the voice in certain elements. Some singers choose surgery to try and get back the voice they had before. Very, very risky.
Libby voiced concerns about Hayley developing them later on. Since I am not an expert, I don't really know, but I was under the impression that if you undertake precautions to take care of your voice, it's not likely to happen, but singing constantly for many years (and Hayley tours so often) is the chance still quite high, despite the precautions?
What does everybody think? Afterall, Russell Watson hadn't been singing for long, and he damaged his voice almost instantly, because he had no training. Sarah is actually very well disciplined, but after 25 years in the business, she succumbed to them to.
