Today, 31 December 2009, there is a full moon -- the second one this month -- in North America and Europe. In New Zealand it's the first full moon of the decade and so they will have to wait 'til late January for their moon to turn blue. Sounds complicated but it sure makes for a good song.

Yes, I hear that a blue moon on New Year's Eve is very rare. And a Blue Moon on New Year's Eve that is eclipsed. as tonight, is rarer still. I's a bit cloudy hear at the moment but they are forecasting clear skies (and a hard frost) tonight so who knows, we might even get to see it.
Happy New Year everyone.
Now all together
Bom da da Bom de Bom de bom bom da bom da da bom de bom de bom bom!

Hi Steve and Martin, I took a photo of the "blue moon" through thick cloud at the point of its maximum eclipse during the evening of New year's Eve - 19:24 GMT. It was hopeless because it was a cloudly evening but you can see the slightly darker area in the lower right quadrant (the edge of the moon doesn't show through the cloud). It was a 1/2 second hand held exposure. The second photo is how I wanted the first one to be - the full moon at midnight - 1/1,000 hand held exposure, quite a bit brighter in what by then was a clear black sky, almost at the zenith! 31Dec2009-19:24-"blue moon" partly eclipsed - 1 Jan 2010 - Full Moon 4 minutes after midnight Dave

Hello folks! I was walking across Trafalgar Square yesterday evening when I noticed the full moon had a chunk missing. The moon is actually made of cheese, so now we know where Hayley's mouse went! Richard

That Sandy is something. She's pretty, witty, and bright. A budding astronomer.

When I was in high school there was a movie called the Moon is Blue. It was condemned by the Catholic Church. Being good catholic boys going to a catholic high school we had to go on opening night to see the movie so we could see what was bad for us. That way we would know what to avoid in the future.
