Hi Guys,
I don't think the HSJS issue is anything like Orla's change of style.
HSJS was selling in a country where Hayley was largely unknown, and where western classical music is not too popular. So she had to do something different to what she is known for in the West if she was to be successful there. You will notice that the HSJS albums were never released in the west, and that here she has not changed her style. She is still known as primarily a classical singer, and "Gloria" and I expect her new international album will continue that.
Orla OTOH, is selling something different into a market where she is already established. She no doubt hopes to take most of her fans with her, and to attract new ones, but that is a far more risky thing to do than release a differently styled album in a place where you are not well known.

I didn't mean they were similar in the commercial aspect, but in it was something both of them done with a high level of artistical implication from the singers and it's something they feeled like doing.
And what I meant with HSJS being more risky than Distant Shore is precisely because Órla was already well-known in the USA and her change was towards a slightly more commercial style, while Hayley being mostly unknown, releases HSJS in a market she can't conquere with this style (a stranger singing j-pop in English? they have their own artists to do that), that's why I think it had more her personal involvement than any commercial basis, but she had already some fanbase there that made it commercially possible.

Do you really think Hayley is that much less popular here than Orla? Celtic Woman may be more popular, but remember that Hayley was in the group... So a lot of the people who know about Orla will know about Hayley too, you know. Not all, but I think most would. Michal, my response about the HSJS album is in the appropriate thread, much to Dave's relief.

Libby, my point was that Órla was more popular in the USA than Hayley in Japan, I wasn't talking about Hayley in USA.
And my msin point was that both of them seemed quite comfortable and inspired by that change of style on those albums and that Órla's done a very fine album that was rather true to herself (with herself being listed as the executive producer of the album and the only author of one song, while having co-written some more). And this is a change I kind of respect more than Celtic Woman's maybe lighter switch, but more responding to not-so-good reasons.

Over here, we may have Hayley but we don't have CW. I once had tickets for a CW concert in the Birmingham Symphony Hall, which is acoustically one of the finest in the world. Then Hayley and Meav left and the tour was cancelled. I know I would have loved it even without Hayley. Martin D

Rachel, read this thread from the beginning and you'll understand. And it's not that I don't respect Celtic Woman's switch, I still like them,, they are still great singers, and I like listening to their new songs. It's just I have the feeling that the change was more commercially motivated than Órla's, whose new pop CD was more coming from her own wish to explore music (see the reasons I said), but, of course, I could be wrong.

I still play and replay this DVD. There are so many songs to love on this one. Among my favs include: Lisa K.- Fields Of Gold" , Alex's "True Colors", "O America" , "The Call" "Amazing Grace", "Nil se'n La" etc...I could go on. And Mairead still enchants with the likes of "The Coast of Galacia" and "The Lost Rose Fantasia".

My favorites are Nil Se'n La, The Call, Lagan Love, Pie Jesu, and Isle of Hope. I never particularly cared for anything Alex did. She was okay, but she never sang anything Celtic, not by herself anyway. Her voice is fine, but didn't really stand out; when listening to it without watching it, I was not always sure if I was hearing her or Lynn. I have yet to hear Susan, and I am still not too familiar with Lisa Lambe.
