Hi all,
Ok this is my first real post in the forum but unfortunately i feel i have to say this .
I've seen Hayley a number of times in Ireland and in each concert all the songs are the same. She doesnt showcase her full repetoir of songs as she does in other countries.
Ive never heard her sing favourites like, never say goodbye, who painted the moon black, summer rain, heaven, let me lie, never saw blue etc.....and none of her japanese albms, which are excellent.
Now i know shes not as popular in Ireland and maybe still trying to establish herself here by singing her best known songs, which she thinks people might know. pokarekare ana, sonny and the infamous Danny Boy.
Unfortunately for her true fans we dont get to hear alot of her other great songs, and i hate to say it, but her concerts here are becoming a little bit repetitive.
Don't know if someone has said this before, but its been irritating me for a while.
Do we have to travel to England or Japan in order to see and hear all she has to offer?
Would like some feedback on this matter.
Thanks,
Wayne

Hi Wayne, I guess it must have something to do with those songs being off 'Celtic Treasure' and it being Hayley's most recent release. I guess it seems repetitive because she's been touring that album up and down the UK etc since 2007. Perhaps you might get some Christmas songs this time? At any rate, there'll be a ton of new songs when the new album is released next year. Jillian

Hi Wayne and welcome!
While I understand your frustration, it rather depends over how long a period you have been attending Hayley’s concerts. As Jillian suggests, her setlists are likely to have been based largely on songs from Treasure since its release with just one or two from each from Pure and Odyssey. At any given time, she is likely to have twenty or so songs rehearsed to performance standard out of which she might choose 16 or 17 if headlining or about 7 is she is a guest artist. But those 20 are not likely to vary hugely until a new album is released.
You and I (and many others here) follow all aspects of Hayley’s career very closely but I imagine that 99 per cent of her fans outside Japan are unaware of the Japanese albums. I therefore would not expect her to perform anything from those albums anywhere else in the world (even though a lot of people would be pleasantly surprised if she did!).
Now for some stats (sorry if I bore anyone!):
I have seen her perform 83 different songs. When you consider I have seen her 74 times over a six year period, 83 songs may not seem very many. However, Hayley has recorded something like 150 songs. If you discount those from HSJS1 and 2 (for reasons stated above), you are left with about 127 of which 83 represents about 65 per cent of her recorded repertoire. For her to have performed so many I think is pretty good. The fact that she hasn’t performed so many in Ireland is, I suggest, not because of the location, but because she has only appeared there about 7 or 8 times as opposed to nearly 200 appearances in England, Scotland and Wales.
Given time, I hope you have the opportunity to see her perform a greater selection of material.
Roger

Hi Roger,
I have heard her perform "1000 Winds" live in England last year, so she has performed at least one song from a Japanese album (I'm not counting Amazing Grace).
She also tends to experiment a bit with things, and songs come and go. "I know you By Heart", which I love, is a current favourite, and one she has never recorded, She also tried out "Talk to Me". Other unrecorded songs heard recently include "O Holy Night" and "Love came down at Christmas". I think she has recorded "God Defend New Zealand" but not recently. Has never recorded "God Save the Queen" or "We'll Meet Again". Or Jerusalem, Rule Britannia, I Vow to Thee My Country, Land of Hope and Glory. "The Moon Represents my Heart in Taiwan.
She has done all of these live in the last six months. Do you need any more.
OK, not in Ireland though!
Every concert I have been to this year has had something new. Especially the last one, the first Winter Magic concert with all those new songs.
BTW I have heard her sing "Never Saw Blue" live twice this year and "Wuthering Heights" twice in 13 months.

I think she has recorded "God Defend New Zealand" but not recently. A little off-topic, but just wondering around... the recording from the bonus CD of NZ special edition of River of Dreams... does anyone have an idea of what year it could be recorded?

Hi Michal
River of Dreams was recorded over a long period, since it is a compilation from her first three international albums, with some extra tracks that were recorded in 2008. I don't have the NZ version, but I know that the second disc includes some of her very early stuff from her albums that were recoded in NZ before she moved to London. My guess is that that recording of God Defend New Zealand came from her first professionally recorded album "Hayley Westenra" (which I do have) made in 2001 when Hayley was 13 years old.

Hmm... actually, I have heard that recording from "Hayley Westenra" and it's not the same one. That old recording is an arrengement with piano, guitar and organ, while the one in River of Dreams bonus CD is a more military arrengement, similar to the one that she performed on the 2006 Memorial (yet, not the same).
But, maybe should I open a new thread about the NZ Special Edition, so we don't get much out of topic here?.

Well, I've never heard her sing anything live, so don't feel too bad. Of course, there'd be songs I'd love to hear, but I'd be happy to hear her sing anything live. If it's so irritating, don't go. But just when you don't, then she'll sing something different, so you'd better just go, anyway. I have never seen that she has ever performed Summer Rain at a concert. I think the only times she's performed a song she's actually written is during her NZ tour 2008, where she sang Let Me Lie (I don't know if it was all the venues, though); and now, during her Winter Magic tour, she's been singing Peace Shall Come. From what I've read of the Irish Christmas concerts, she sang a few different songs than at the official WM concerts in England. And she sang O Holy Night, which nobody has on a CD of hers! On her River of Dreams tour, she sang some of her older songs she hadn't done in a while, like River of Dreams, Wuthering Heights, and yes, Never Saw Blue. That is one of my favorites, too (as my banner below suggests), and I too would love to hear it live. Yeah, I think you would have to go to Japan or Taiwan to hear a Japanese song. It is rare that she sings one of them outside of Asia. The album is not promoted anywhere else. I understand your wishes of songs for her to sing, but she can't please everyone.

Patience Libby dear,
I have a very good video (at least I think so) of O Holy Night from Bath, (and a much worse one of part of it from Peterborough which I doubt I will ever post anywhere). I just know you are going to love it, and I will upload it next week,, once the WM tour is over.
But it seems to me that Hayley has genius to spare, she throws it away in a cavalier fashion, whilst other artists milk whatever talent they have for all they can. I think some of Tchaikovsky's music is a bit like that, especially the first piano concerto, where he starts of with one of the grandest themes in all of music, then seems to tire of it after a couple of repetitions ang goes off to do something else entirely.
Hayley just has so much wonderful stuff that so many people would enjoy I'm sure if they knew about it. It is just so frustrating!

Don't forget about Love Came Down at Christmas, too. I finally heard a version of it, but it was probably a lot more upbeat than the original version, so I'm still unsure exactly how it's supposed to sound. But I will wait as patiently as I can to hear Hayley's version. The tour will be over on Tuesday...

I uploaded "Love Came Down" to YouTube this evening Libby (look in the Peterborough Concert thread or the Miscellaneous YouTube thread, or Twitter, or Digital Spy or the Official Forum (is that enough)). Hope you like it
Best wishes for Christmas
