It's Katherine Jenkins v Cheryl Cole: Opera singer lands £100k role as judge on new ITV talent show

Katherine Jenkins is to follow in the footsteps of Cheryl Cole after landing a six-figure deal to appear as a judge on a new ITV Saturday night talent show.
The 29-year-old mezzo-soprano is set to see her profile soar as she advises pop stars how to sing opera.
Miss Jenkins will become the broadcaster’s new face of Saturday night television with the agreement, said to be worth about £100,000.

Myleene Klass - who rose to fame in pop band Hear’Say after appearing on ITV1’s Pop Stars - will host the programme, which is yet to be named.

Using the now familiar format of Strictly Come Dancing and Dancing On Ice, the show will see celebrities learning how to become opera singers.

However, it is expected that those taking part will be existing pop or musical performers, who already have some proven vocal talent.
One source said: ‘Katherine and the panel will advise singers how to take on opera. Each week someone will be voted off. With her classical background, Myleene is probably the ideal host.’

It is expected that there will be another two judges on the panel – at least one of which will be a man.
Britain’s Got Talent winner Paul Potts and tenor Russell Watson are tipped as possible contenders.

I personally don't think that Katherine is in a position to show pop singers to sing opera as she is not an opera singer and the material she is doing at the moment seems to be getting more and more poppier, but that's just my opinion . I've got nothing against Katherine...I just think someone like Jonathan Ansell would be better at being a judge . .I think I've had enough of this type of show...X Factor has put me off...but, I suppose on the plus side, this should be better than X Factor

Thanks for the article, Martin. I agree, it is "interesting"! I'm not sure what to think about it yet and I wonder if ITV are scraping the barrel somewhat with their reality talent programmes. I mean, who exactly is this one aimed at? The opera purists will never approve of a pop singer's rendition of an aria no matter how good it might be and the pop lovers of this world will not be interested in opera. Yet it is expected to be screened on Saturday nights, presumably during prime time. Oh well, it will be.... er... interesting!

Sounds to me like it's aimed at people who like to see Pop stars embarrass themselves and all those guys who find Katherine very attractive (IE most of us! ). The fact that she's not really an Opera singer doesn't matter if they can persuade her to wear somewhat revealing outfits.

So you have pretty girls, embarrassed contestants and the surprise factor of never really knowing who might turn out to be good after all. The perfect recipe for most of the talent shows on TV today, in fact...
