La Luna, yes, that was a great album, I always loved it years before I had ever heard of Hayley. But compare her Scarborough Fair from that album to Hayley's, well, compared to Hayley Sarah's voice sounds thin and weak. And you are always aware that Sarah is using every trick in the book and some that aren't to disguise her weakenesses, almost as if she is hiding behind her backing musicians, whereas Hayley, as I have said before, could not be more exposed. Her voice is there for all to hear, any error, however slight, would stick out like a ore thumb.
There is music and music and things move on. For me, Hayley has redefined everything. She has set a new standard. Sarah, you were great among ordinary mortals. But you struggle against angels.

I've heard Sarah live, and she doesn't hide behind anything. Her Nessun Dorma was just incredible. The end noted lasted forever, unlike Paul Potts and his ilk. She was note perfect at every moment of the show. Before 2005, she had a tremendous voice. Her power and versatility would have sung Hayley off the stage, imho. But I don't think she could these days. She's lost a lot of that ability as far as I can tell. Whether it's age or the nodules she developed, I don't know, but one listen to her latest album and it's really evident. I can't stand to have it on for more than one song, her "new" voice grates that much.
Regardless, I know what you're saying when you say she uses "tricks". She's not using "tricks" to hide anything, but the overblown arrangements you find on all of her albums are down to her camp and theatrical artistic nature - nothing more. Her producer comes from a Euro-pop/rock background, too.
I don't like Scarborough Fair - everyone does it, but it's to each their own which rendition they prefer. I actually favour Amy Nuttall's version if I favour any, because the arrangement is so gorgeous. <3

Hi Nicola, Well, my favourite way to hear Hayley is unaccompanied. Sarah's overblown backings do her no favours. Why does she need them? A great voice should be able to stand on its own. As for Scarborough Fair, well I suppose the definitive version is Martin Carthy, or perhaps Simon and Garfunkel or Bob Dylan's slightly different version from his album Nashville Skyline. But my own personal favourite is Hayleys performance at Beaumanor. She kept looking at people she recognised in the audience, and knowing where most of them were, I could probably tell you who she was looking at at any particular time. She seemed to look directly at me several times too, and it really doesn't get any better than that. It felt as if she was singing the song to me personally. Have a look for yourself. www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0zotVShxtAMartin D

But what I meant to post here, before I got distracted, was some stats about Hayley's shrinking lead on Nicola's user chart. Here is what I have seen this week, at 9am UK time each day
Day Votes for Hayley Hayley's lead Monday 6604 187 Tuesday +83 179 Wednesday +127 174 Thursday +97 152 Friday +55 121
So you see we need to make an effort. Otherwise, Hayley will be overtaken in 10 days time.

Yes Martin! The trend has been quite worrying but it does seem to have slowed today - I looked about 30 minutes ago and it was still around 118. I think, as I've suggested before, our consistency will prevail but we do need to keep the votes for Hayley rollong in!! Best wishes Grant

Yes, I put out an appeal on all channels. And it seems to have helped. So keep it up folks, our princess is the best female singer there is, and perhaps the best there has ever been. In any genre, not just classical crossover. Let's make sure she knows it and that Nicola's chart reflects that. Sarah, I'll agree, was awesome in her day, and I liked her music, but this generation belongs to Hayley.

Martin D Well, at the moment, Sarah's fans are rallying and Hayley's lead is back to just over 150 - will be interesting to see what tomorrow brings! Best wishes Grant
