Off topic I know but I thought the serious rainfall and flooding in Cumbria (NW England) and SW Scotland deserved a mention. At least two of our members may have encountered this - Dean (everything OK?) and my daughter Emma who had to drive along the S Cumbrian coast for the last 3 days while this event has been happening. Her friend's car engine is wrecked due to flooding. it's been a worrying time. Sadly, a road bridge collapsed and a policeman has died while directing traffic off it to safety. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8370865.stmThere were 8 foot deep floods in Cockermouth and the all-time 24 hour rainfall record for the UK has been smashed (though still unofficial) at Seathwaite Cumbria, with 314mm of rain, 12.4 inches, over a foot! The UK Met Office deserve a special mention for their uncannily accurate warnings and "red alerts" for the area - they got it exactly right and that would have saved many lives. It has now stopped raining but more is forecast tomorrow. I wish everyone in that area well, not least those of us who we know. Dave

Just saw this on the News on dutch television. More than 170 mm rain............ What a terrible situation, the only thing i hope, not more rain is falling, and everything becomes normal as soon as possible.

Hi
I am rather lucky as it's not been too bad here today, there was a little rain today compared to the last 48 hours. Yesterday saw a flood warning for Askam (which is right on the duddon estuary) & further up the coastline, thankfully we had no floods here but Duddon Bridge (12 miles away) has was shut for most of yesterday, due to the flooding. Driving conditions last night were dreadful. I know that less than 30 miles from here the situation is much worse. There are still roads near me that are flooded but compared to further up the A595 we are much better off.

Does this remind anyone of the movie Flood?
I hope everyone is ok and the water levels go down soon.

Yes, this is awful. My colleage at the next desk was worried this morning after hearing about the loss of a polkice officer in Workington, since his niece is a police officer in Workington, but when the next bulletin mentioned policeMAN he was mightily releived. Sue and I have a fewe days booked next week in that part of the world.
But this is 12 inches of rain,at least in Seathwaite, which always used to be kwnown as the wettest place in England. What they meant, of course, is the wettest place with a rain gauge!. We saw pictures of people in Cockermouth wading down the street with water up to thier chests.
Not to belittle it, but this is only a tenth of the amount of rain that hit the south of Taiwan a few weeks ago.

Just got back from four days in Keswick. Two of the three bridges in the town are closed, and I've never seen the pubs and restaurants so empty. We were the only guests in the guest house where we stayed for two of the three nights.
On Friday evening we saw Prince Charles switch on the Christmas lights. He too made an appeal for people not to abandon the Lake District - it is still open for business despite the floods. And tourism is the main industry there these days, without it the people who live there would be struggling.
