It sounds as though the duet was a surprise for both of them. Richard

From Legion magazine: Published: 22 October 2009 Favourite WWII songstress, Dame Vera Lynn, wowed crowds today when she helped launch the Poppy Appeal 2009 at the Horse Guards Parade in London. She was joined by new forces sweetheart, Hayley Westenra, who sang Dame Vera’s famous ‘We’ll Meet Again’ wartime song, in a tribute to the 93-year-old singer. Halfway through the tune, Ms Westenra gave the microphone to Dame Vera, who sang along to the delight of onlookers. Addressing the crowd, Dame Vera said: “Let’s remember the boys and girls that are out there in Afghanistan, and not forgetting of course, our boys that were in the last conflict. So, thank you all for coming, and do spare a moment of peace and quietness to remember and mentally wish our forces safely back home.” This year’s Poppy Appeal is directed at the armed forces personnel and their families who have been affected by the war in Afghanistan. The Royal British Legion hopes to raise at least £30 million, in order to equal the amount raised in last year’s Appeal. Cpl Simon Brown, who was shot by a sniper in Iraq while trying to repair a vehicle, was there to champion the welfare work of The Royal British Legion. The corporal, who is currently serving in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers but is set to become a teacher in the new year, said: “The Legion were great to talk to after what happened. They weren’t patronising at all, and helped me have the confidence to go on and do better things.” Also there to support the launch was ex-service woman Lisa Taylor, 37, who struggled to provide for her two young daughters with healthcare when she left the Royal Army Medical Corps, as well as manage the upkeep of her home. But a few years ago, she was approached by the Legion, who offered the single mum financial support. “I can’t explain how wonderful it was to be helped by the Legion,” she said. “And even now, when I’m a bit more on my feet, I know they’re always there if I need them.” Ms Westenra, who helped launch last year’s Poppy Appeal in Basra, said that this Appeal was extra special, thanks to Dame Vera’s involvement.
“I’m really honoured to be involved. I’m a huge fan of hers and to have the opportunity to sing with her was amazing. She was singing away and I thought that was so cool.”
She added: “I don’t think anyone can really match the work Dame Vera’s done – she really dedicated her whole life to the troops, but I’ve now started on the journey and I hope to continue to support the armed forces as much as I can.”
Richard

Incidentally everyone, if you're on Twitter, you can add a poppy to you avatar to show your support for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. Best wishes Grant My avatar now wears a poppy with pride! Its nice to see my picture with a bit of colour! I also donated £10 to the Legion through their website. I suppose the money I save from not drinking alcohol can go towards a much greater cause! Cheers Ben

Phew!! Just spent most of the last eight hours working on pictures from yesterday. I have another 20 or so to post but, so as not to clog the forum with pictures at a time when it's rather quiet, I'm going to hold back a bit.
I will post a few more last thing tonight and the rest tomorrow or Sunday.
Best wishes Grant

Hi Grant,
Thanks for the wonderful pictures. I was blown away by the videos too Dave, I loved to see the way Hayley is with Dame Vera. I'm more than ever motivated to do something to support the RBL this year. I shall make a donation of course, and they even sent me a pack yesterday to help me to support their work. Although I cannot find the time to sell poppies, I'll find other ways to support them.

I suspect the black dress under the coat at the launch is the same one she wore for GMTV. Do any of our experts think any differently.

I don't think there's much doubt that it's the same dress. It looks just the same, and she wouldn't have had much time to change into another, identical one. Thanks for the great photos and videos!
