Fiona presents Bear Serenade DVD for WSPA

Fiona has just finished shooting a documentary on the plight of bears who are kept chained up around Europe.
The first part was shot during her recent concert in Wales and then she and Ian made a trip to a bear sanctuary 30 minutes outside Brasov in Romania.

Violinist gets at the bear facts

Kiwi-born violinist Fiona Pears won't just be entertaining the audience with her musical skill tonight, she will be sharing her "incredible" Romanian experience with them too.

Pears, who divides her time between New Zealand and London, travelled to the Romanian bear sanctuary last year with the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA).

"The whole area is just stunning," she said of the sanctuary.

"When you hear about bears being in enclosures ... it's not really like that. They have hectares of forest they play in."

She said there were also areas the bears could swim and climb trees.

"The first bears I saw were baby bears. They are pretty big and most of them are there because they have lost their mums early – they have been shot or are yet to be rescued."

The sanctuary is as close to their natural environment as they can get, she said.

While she was at the sanctuary, Pears said she played the violin to a big, blind bear named Max.

"Max seemed to like the violin, he was swaying back and forward," she said.

"I still go to my computer and look at the photos and go, `Did that really happen?' I feel like I am the lucky one being able to promote something like this and get to go there."

She said Victor, the man who runs the sanctuary, was an incredible man and the amount of work required was amazing.

"You have no idea how many people it takes and how many hours it takes just to keep 30 or 40 bears in good health. And there are heaps of bears still waiting to be rescued."

This was why Pears was so keen on letting people know about the work WSPA was doing for these bears.

"It's good to know about helping something like this, like the bears. Especially when you see the pictures on television," she said.

"It's absolutely horrible. It gets the point across but I'm in floods of tears."

Pears said she didn't have to see the bears chained up and still in captivity when she was in Romania.

"I knew about it, I didn't need to see it."

She hoped to return to Romania and put on a concert to raise more money and awareness for the bears.

During her New Zealand tour, Pears would talk about the experience and sell copies of the film made while she was in Romania, Bear Serenade.

She said in New Zealand, the SPCA did an amazing job, and thought helping charities was a good thing.

"New Zealanders by nature are big animal lovers.

"I don't know anyone that can see those pictures and not be affected.

"If just a few people donate to the WSPA or buy my DVD, it will change these bears' lives forever," she said.

Fiona Pears performs at Repertory House in Invercargill tonight. The show starts at 8pm with tickets available at the door. Adults $25, concession $20, and student rush $15.
