It seems that Hayley has met and performed for the Queen quite a few times, so I thought it might be fun to have a thread devoted to this topic. I'm interested in all the events/functions for which Hayley has performed for the Queen, any photos, videos, articles, etc. On the news fairly recently, I heard that they've abolished the tradition of walking backwards. So, I guess Hayley must've had to walk backwards a few times! That can't be easy in heels! Any footage of this? Apparently the Queen likes Hayley. Does she have her CDs? Do any of the other members of the Royal family also enjoy Hayley's music? So, here's Hayley singing for the NZ War Memorial in London in 2006: www.youtube.com/watch?v=fL9CFbtwUWc

I think we would need to start with the year 2004. It was during that time that she first met/performed for Her Majesty the Queen, President Bush and Tony Blair at a private dinner at the US Ambassador's residence in London. She also performed for the Queen at the prestigious Royal Variety Show and the Remembrance Day ceremony in London. There is a video of her singing "Tonight We'll Light a Candle" (to the tune of "Pokarekare Ana") somewhere on the main HWI site.

Funnily enough, I (re)discovered a reasonably good quality (better than the previous version) recording of "Tonight We'll Light A Candle" buried in the HWI vaults only yesterday and I thought that, although it's basically just a different version of "Pokarekare Ana", it is different enough to justify preparing and uploading it. I may well will do that. Cheers, Dave Edit - done, processed and uploaded. It's absolutely gorgeous, a young Hayley at her very best! www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2rHs46UPn4

Hi Dave,
Thank you for uploading 'Tonight We'll Light a Candle.' It really is quite beautiful..
Libby, I believe that there was an Odyssey promotional video which showed Hayley shaking hands with the Queen. I'll have to find the link, and I can't until tomorrow.

Thanks for the video. It kept stopping and starting, though. Youtube's been doing that to me a lot lately, and it's very frustrating. It's hard to listen to things like that. I had to stop. I don't know if it's youtube's fault, or my computer's. I'll try it another time to see if it's any better.

Hello Libby! Once the YouTube video has downloaded fully, it should play without stopping. Hayley took part in the Festival of Remembrance again last year, singing 'Today Won't Come Again' with Jonathan Ansell: www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvraPF9zrhoHayley met the Queen yet again at the opening of the Royal British Legion's new headquarters in Borough High Street on 27th February 2009. You can read all about it in this thread. Richard

Richard, I'm not sure exactly what you mean. I click on the link, come to the site, and wait for the video to start. I even refreshed the page. What more can I possibly do? It still stops and starts. As I said, this has been happening with other videos, too. Remember, the HWI videos of the World Games were like that for me, except they hadn't been posted on youtube then.

Hi Libby,
When the video starts to play press the pause button. Press play once the line indicating the download is well past half way. It should then play thro' to the end.

Okay, thanks, I'll try it. Will that work on other videos I have trouble with, too?

Hi Libby,
I often have that problem. It always seems to work.

Since the topic of the Queen clapping for Hayley came up in the recent London Eye interview, I watched these Festival of Remembrance videos again. So, did they mean she clapped at the most recent Festival, when she sang For the Fallen? I watched it, and they didn't show the Queen at all, unless they (Dave) cut it off before they showed her. However, I did see that she clapped for her duet with Jonathan Ansell in 2008, singing "Today Won't Come Again". In that case, she not only clapped for Hayley, but Jonathan as well! Of course, there's no telling whom she appreciated the most. Here's the video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvraPF9zrhoAnd yes, she also clapped for We'll Meet Again! www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBX16iBQ0rII would really like to know if she clapped for the 2010 festival too.

I certainly wouldn't cut off the Queen of England and New Zealand in case her response was "off with his head"! The Queen is always polite at such events but I don't know if it is "correct" for her to applaud a song or hymn during the memorial service part of the Festival. I can't remember if For the Fallen came before or after the start of the actual service, it was sung during the laying of the drums, other members may know more. We'll Meet Again and Today Won't Come Again occurred before the start of the service part of the Festival, which may explain why The Queen applauded. Cheers, Dave

So, does that mean it's not really anything special after all if the Queen claps for Hayley?
