With the release date being next Monday and Hayley having no concerts on either Monday or Tuesday, it wouldn't at all surprise me to see Hayley on UK TV promoting the album on these two days. Eyes and ears peeled! Martin

I'm still waiting to see her sing one of the songs from the album live at the show (not necessarily live on TV, but I've yet to see anything like this so far). That's the best way to promote the album, to sing something from it.
I e-mailed another radio station today. I've done 3 so far, plus a company that provides music service to lots of major stores, restaurants, etc. The only response I've received has been one from the Christian station, to thank me and say that she would forward my message. I'm also going to see if I can manage to play some at work, but no guarantees. I would've done it a long time ago if it were possible, but the opportunity has never arisen.

Every song on this new albumn is a winner, but if I had to single one out it's safe to say that Veni Veni Emmanuel is the unrivalled high point of Winter Magic. It's also true that throughout the album Hayley seems to be singing directly to each one of us, as though you or I were the only one in the room. Now that's amazing!

I think I would agree that VVE gets first place; not only the vocals, but the arrangement, and the music, too. At first I was disappointed it wasn't in English, but now it doesn't make any difference to me what language it's in. My favorite part of this song is the 3rd verse. I love the way she sort of lilts on the word "Davidica". Then the music right after the Refrain is especially hauntingly beautiful. The Raven Quartet are apparently the ones playing so wonderfully! I think it might be a good idea to have a General thread for Winter Magic, where we can discuss the songs, since the songs are mostly the same on all versions. That way, instead of having scattered comments about them in each version thread, we can discuss them all in one place. Thanks!

I actually prefer the hymn in Latin as it adds a sort of ancient mystique. I love the way Hayley pronounces 'Israel'....classic Hebrew. Graeme

Hi Grant and everyone.
So has my one UK copy arrived and I played it last night.
It is a delightfully balanced, gentle CD, which I would describe as subtle variations on a theme. Her own songs sit well within the whole, doubtless contributing to the selection of the others, as well as the fact that they are (to me) less well known. It is cleverly worked and succeeds in a very difficult period, how to be traditional and new without being repetitive or gimmicky. Apart from the fuller bodied closing song with Ronan Keating, this CD is subtle with light arrangements that harmonise well with her vocals. Much work has been devoted to both the accompaniments in themselves and to her own interpretation and delivery.
In all her songs there is meaning and their lightness of touch disguises the depth of their creation. Initially I had thought I preferred her first song, 'Christmas Morning' but go back and hear her other two again. Her songs are like a mellow river whose gentle flow hides an inner depth.

Graeme Agreed on both counts! The fact that it is sung in Latin makes it stand out as more unusual and now having heard and seen it sung live, I think the Latin lyrics better suit Hayley's vocals. Interestingly, it is the first Sunday in Advent today and I processed the choir to "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel"! quite made my day - even tried out a bit of Latin myself. Best wishes Grant

Hello everyone The boxes of "Winter Magic" CD's on sale yesterday at Banbury included a wad of flyers advertising the release. The lady from St Mary's selling the CD's on behalf of Bedlam was somewhat perplexed when I asked if I could have some flyers but didn't want a CD! Best wishes Grant

Here's a brief comment from MassLive.com: November 29, 2009, 6:00AM Another classy offering arrives courtesy of Hayley Westenra. Her “Winter Magic” (Decca/Universal) puts an emphasis on “beautiful songs” and there are plenty, including “River,” “The Coventry Carol” and “Silent Night.”
Richard

Hello everyone It has only just dawned on me that there is something rather odd about the reverse side of the flyer I've just posted.
Anyone spot what it is? Best wishes Grant
