Hi all, This thread is here to encourage learning/ teaching Hayley's songs on the guitar. The idea was conceived by one of our newest members, Ben. Basically, if you work out the chord progressions in any of Hayley's songs please share them here, and we will hopefully come up with a little collection of campfire songs!! Please don't post anything copyright (like sheet music). Enjoy! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif

Hi people
(A note to those reading - the chords I state are the actual chords, not the finger positions associated with them - this only applies if the song requires a capo!!!)
G minor - 0-2-2-0-0-0 C minor - x-0-2-2-1-0 D7 - x-2-1-2-0-2 Eb major - 0-3-2-0-1-0
I've just revised the chords on 'Summer Fly'
The chords for the verses go - G minor, C minor, D7, G minor
The chords for the chorus go - G minor, Eb major, D7, G minor
When strumming, slap your hand against the strings on every 4th strum to get the percussive effect - the guitarist on the recording does it as well.
Cheers
Ben

Hi people
(A note to those reading - if particular songs require a capo, the chords I state are the actual chords as they sound)
Both Sides Now - This is a cover of a Joni Mitchell song of the same name. Capo at the 5th fret. Here are the chords (finger shapes) (x's mean dont play the string)
A major - 0-2-2-1-x-x D/A -0-x-2-2-2-x E/A -0-3-5-5-5-x Bm7 -2-x-2-2-2-x E7sus4 - x-2-4-2-5-2 Asus4 -0-2-2-2-0-x
Intro and breaks between verses- 2 chords per bar - A major, D/A (D with A in the bass)
E/A D/A A Rows and flows of angel hair E/A And ice cream castles in the air E/A D/A And feather canyons evrywhere Bm7 E7sus4 Ive looked at clouds that way
E/A D/A A Now they only block the sun E/A A They rain and snow on evryone E/A D/A So many things I would have done Bm7 E7sus4 But clouds got in my way
A Asus4 A Ive looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow E/A D/A A Its cloud illusions I recall E7sus4 I really dont know clouds at all
E/A D/A A Moons and junes and ferris wheels E/A The dizzy dancing way you feel E/A D/A As evry fairy tale comes real Bm7 E7sus4 Ive looked at love that way
E/A D/A A But now its just another show E/A You leave em laughing when you go E/A D/A And if you care, dont let them know Bm7 E7sus4 Dont give yourself away
A Asus4 A Ive looked at love from both sides now
From give and take, and still somehow E/A D/A A Its loves illusions I recall E7sus4 I really dont know love at all
E/A D/A A Tears and fears and feeling proud E/A A To say I love you right out loud E/A D/A Dreams and schemes and circus crowds Bm7 E7sus4 Ive looked at life that way
E/A D/A A But now old friends are acting strange E/A They shake their heads, they say Ive changed E/A D/A Well somethings lost, but somethings gained Bm7 E7sus4 In living evry day
A Asus4 A Ive looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow E/A D/A A Its lifes illusions I recall E7sus4 I really dont know life at all
There you go people!
Cheers

Thanks Ben,
One thing that would help me out here is if you show how to play these difficult chords like E/A and D/A at the start. I only know how to play majors, minors, and 7ths off the top of my head... you could do it like they do elsewhere, e.g. E-minor = 0-2-2-0-0-0.
In fact since most songs usually just have one key why don't you do this for all the chords at the top, that way beginners will be able to have a go too. And you could just say capo at position X, with these chords, and how to play them. And then go from there. What do you think?

Hi Jono
Yeah good idea - I was looking at how I laid that last post out and I wasnt completely satisfied - it can look a bit overwhelming - il do what you suggested and put the chords at the top
Thanks
Ben

Hi Jono
Hope this helps. I'm not too sure about the little 2 note 'fills' that the player does at various points, but these are the chords anyway
Cheers

Hi people
These are the chords for Hayley's duet with Lee Mead on his album 'Nothing Else Matters'. The song is called 'When The Stars Go Blue' Again, this song uses a capo at the 3rd fret - meaning that the chord names are the actual chords. (x means dont play the string). I've included the point where the particular lyrics come in to show when to change chords.
C minor - X-0-2-2-1-0 (A minor finger shape) Eb major - X-3-2-0-1-0 (C major finger shape) Bb major - 3-2-0-0-3-3 (G major finger shape) F major - 5-5-4-0-0-0 (D major second inversion)
Verses:
C minor Eb major Bb major F major
"Where do you go when your lonely"
Eb major, Bb major, F major (x2) Eb major, Bb major, C minor
Chorus - "Blue....."
Bb major, F major, C minor, Eb major (x3) Eb major, C minor
Hope you enjoy!
Cheers
Ben

Santa Lucia. Would love to know how to play that! I thought it was going to be capo at fret 5, but it is played without capo in this video HERECheers Jono P.S. I just cant seem to work out Both Sides Now...

Hi Jono, Hmm, Santa Lucia.. I got B and F# for the first two chords and then kind of got stuck after that. Ben might be able to help on that one. What kind of trouble are you having with Both Sides Now? I don't use a capo and the chords seem to work well.

Grrr, I just can't seem to get it to sound remotely right! (Both Sides Now) I'm sure Ben has it right though! It's just me lol. Jono

Hi Jono
You dont need to strictly stick to my version of how to play Both Sides Now - try the song without a capo, which to be honest would be slightly easier! Its just the way that I play the song, but it would probably sound brighter if you tried the song without a capo.
Thanks Cathleen for the chords to Pokarekare Ana! - it was on Classic FM a couple of days ago as well.
Cheers

Hi everyone This post is going to focus on the song 'Po Atarau/Haere Ra'. In my opinion this is one of the most beautiful songs Hayley has ever recorded. This song was originally a 'Swiss Cradle Song', and was released in Australia as a popular piano piece. It was quickly adapted in New Zealand to the song 'Po Atarau', and was used to bid farewell to Maori soldiers departing for the First World War. This song sounds like it has a time signature of 6/8 (6 quaver beats per bar). The chords are simply 'broken chords' (arpeggiated). Here it is.... 2 bar intro - D major D.....G....D Po atarau D.............G.......D E moea iho nei G...............D E haere ana E.....................A Koe ki pamamao D....G....D Haere ra D.............G.....D..D7 Ka hoki mai ano G........D Ki i te tau G/B..Em7..A7..D E tangi atu nei D.......G........D Now is the hour, D........................G..............D when we must say goodbye G........................D Soon you'll be sailing, E........................A far across the sea. D........G.........D While you're away, D.................G..................D D7 Oh please remember me. G...................D When you return, G/B......Em7.......A7.......D you'll find me waiting here. D.......G.......D D.......G.......D A......Asus4....A G................Bm A...............Asus4 D.......G........D Now is the hour, D........................G..............D D7 - beautiful harmony!! when we must say goodbye G................D When you return, G/B......Em7.......A7.......D you'll find me waiting here. (Repeat last 2 lines twice) Have fun with this everyone - its such a beautiful and emotional song! All these chords are done to the best of my knowledge and ability! Cheers Ben
