I've just recently been really getting into this song! It's now one of my all time Hayley favourites! The string backing is really what makes this song and I was very pleased to find out that Hayley had written the lyrics and the melody.
I was wondering if Summer Rain had ever been performed live?

Hi Jillian, Yes. At Waipara Concert South Island NZ in front of ~ 2000 people Feb 2008. She was absolutely stunning in her performance , yet it was not my personal favourite from Treasure at all. Since that time SR holds a special something for me & I stop breathing when I hear the opening bars & remain spellbound until the end. www.mediafire.com/?c2bvlcyvwem ......... 'Let me lie' video from Ross.hwi.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=Concert&action=display&thread=1060&page=16#26827 ........ The Waipara list. And just for you Jillian: .... how she was dressed. 2nd Half. Hi Jillian, Graeme and all, Just for the record, I am not aware that Hayley has sung 'Summer Rain' live in the UK. Not at any of the concerts I have attended anyway. Seems unfair really - we get plentry of summer rain but we don't get the song! Roger

I can understand why it isn't played live all that much. The big impact of the song is in the musical backing and I think that if you couldn't get a full orchestra to recreate the sound, the song might lose some of its impact. Would Hayley be adverse to simply playing a backing track of the music or does she generally prefer to have all her music live? Thanks for the links, Graeme. I've already downloaded 'Let Me Lie' -- that was a treat. Is that the only recording of that song? By the way, doesn't Hayley's hair look great there. I love it when she goes all out on the curls -- it really adds a load of instant glamour.

Hi Jillian, I have never asked her but I feel sure she would prefer live backing whenever possible. She has used backing tracks, notably during the Il Divo tour, but I think that was for practical reasons. So, she would do it but would prefer not to. I'm sure she would not use a backingtrack for one song and Raven, for example, throughout the rest of the concert. Roger

Hi Roger and Jillian,
Yes, I think she left backing tracks behing her after WITA! And was probably glad to do so.
But I have l aways felt that the less backing the better with Hayley. I love to hear her singing unaccompanied. But I don't think that would work with SR, the arrangement makes a huge contribution to the appeal of that song, and without it I think it would fall flat.

Hi Martin,
Was WITA recorded kareoke style? To be honest, I've wondered the same about her NZ debut 'Hayley Westenra' -- the difference in the standard of production between that and Pure is staggering.

Hi Jillian,
Yes, in her book "In her own Voice" Hayley mentions that her choice of material was restricted by the Karaoke CDs she had available. Plus she had the backing tracks from the McDonalds Young Entertainers TV show, Walking in the Air, Widshing you were some how here with me, and The Mists of Islay. But these were limited in length to fit the format of the TV show.
