Why quartet can't wait to get intimate

THE Pavão String Quartet formed at the Royal Academy of Music 12 years ago and in that time have recorded four CDs, performed on the Radio 1 Chart Show Live, and have even been nominated for a Classical Brit Award.

Next Friday, August 6, the dynamic foursome tone things down a little when they open the first Alsager Arts Festival at Wesley Place Methodist Church.

"These are the kind of concerts that we really enjoying playing because, in truth, this is what string quartets were made for," says 30-year-old cellist Bryony James. "Of course it's great to play in big venues and we enjoy travelling with our job, but performing in smaller places is wonderful because you feel a lot closer to the audience."

Everything from Mozart to Duke Ellington is on offer next week; a repertoire the quartet are renowned for.

Bryony says: "We tend to play a lot of light classical music together with songs from the golden age of songwriting. If people want a good introduction to classical music then I guess it's perfect for them, but likewise, if it's the American Songbook you enjoy then there's something for you too."

Comprising violinists Kerenza Peacock and Jenny Sacha, viola player Natália Gomes and Bryony, the Pavão Quartet are fast becoming one of the most vibrant and sought-after quartets of their generation. Over the past few years alone they have performed with some of the biggest names in classical music including Hayley Westenra, the singer who first introduced them to festival director Daniel Keen.

"I saw them perform with Hayley in London and hoped they would have been able to perform with her at the Victoria Hall, but for some reason it didn't happen," says 22-year-old Daniel, who is responsible for staging several classical concerts in and around North Staffordshire with his company KW Promotions.

"However, they did play at that venue last year when Jonathan Ansell and Faryl Smith performed a charity concert. Everything I've ever heard about them has been fantastic and when they did their 10-minute solo slot that night people were raving about them long afterwards."

As the first of four Friday-night concerts taking place at the Methodist Church throughout August, the Pavão Quartet will provide a brilliant platform for the other acts to follow.

Daniel adds: "Alongside the quartet we've also got Australian saxophonist Amy Dickson coming on August 13, Geoff Gascoyne's Pop Bop on August 20, and the Harlequin Brass Band on August 27.

"The festival also has three free events including a Festival Praise with comedian Bobby Ball on Sunday, August 22 at 2pm, a performance in Alsager town centre by Delta Brass on Wednesday, August 18 and a Learn To Play Brass special on Wednesday, August 25."

The Pavão Quartet will be performing at the Wesley Place Methodist Church, Alsager, on Friday, August 6 at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £10 and are available from the festival website or in person at Fusion, Wall Street and Two Thumbs Up in Alsager town centre.
