Hi Peter, you should click on the small image of a film camera. It should then play OK, although the image quality isn't up to modern standards.
There is a problem with the 2003 video menu, I'll have a look at that later this evening.
Cheers, Dave

I refrained from commenting on the odd appearance of the HWI web link as I thought it might be my browser. It has just received an upgrade and that MAY have resolved an earlier problem on which I PM'd Richard who passed on to the team. I'll advise if that proves consistent. I'm not good on symbols. I'd rather they called them Ladies and Gentlemen. How is one to tell that the sign for ladies isn't representing a Scot in a kilt? Or a Greek, even more disconcerting. I prefer certainty! Steve, there are many merits in conciseness but it can cause problems! I should cope with it easily as I am of the age to be familiar with the horrific expense of telegrams! Peter S.

WOW!! I'd not seen that one before. It's a pity about the sound quality, but what a wonderful night for Hayley, aged 15, that must have been.

Hi everyone, Good news, I have located a much higher quality version of the Faenol concert from August 2003, complete (all 50 minutes of it). I now recall that a few years ago, I spent a few weeks and many sleepless nights re-copying it from an original VHS tape and restoring the image and sound quality as much as possible. The result is much better than what you have seen by clicking that link, although part of it was posted at one time either on HWI or in the forum... it must have been because someone pinched "my" Pokarekare Ana for their YouTube channel - but we won't talk about or post any links to that, OK? Anyway, I'm now going to re-do the work on Pokarekare Ana (duet with Bryn Terfel) and complete Hayley's solo of In Trutina and her trio of Ave Maria (Schubert) with Bryn and Jose Carreras. It may be a week or so before I can complete it all so watch this space - well another thread because there must already be one, somewhere. The 2003 video menu is another story altogether and will have to wait until after Faenol. Cheers, Dave

Bryn Terfel In Recital Christchurch Town Hall 13th June 8pmI arrived just after 7pm to pick up my ticket. While I had a coffee I got talking to a couple who came all the way from Blenheim ( 300km) to see the concert. When I told them that Hayley got me interested in classical music they remembered seeing Hayley and Sophie singing on the back of a truck when Hayley was about 14yo. My seat turned out to have a good view of Bryn. I was side onto the stage but pretty close to it so got a good view. Bryn was also very good at facing the different sections of the audience so everyone could hear his amazing voice clearly and also his great facial expressions. The size of the audience was very disappointing and when Bryn came onto the stage he apologized for having his concert at the same time as the All Blacks were playing France in Dunedin. As it was I made the right choice in coming to the concert. Accompanying Bryn on the piano was Terence Dennis. For the first half of the concert Bryn sang several British art songs set to the poems of John Masefield. John Ireland Sea-Fever Vagabond The Bells Of San Marie Bryn is a Bass-Baritone and you could feel his loud deep voice and yet he could also get the soft high notes as well. After this set he went off the stage and when he came back he said that France was leading 17-3, we all groaned. Peter Warlock Captain Stratton's Fancy Frederick Keel Salt-Water Ballads: Port Of Many Ships, Trade Winds, Mother Carey Roger Quilter Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal, Op. 3, No. 2 Weep You No More, Sad Fountains, Op. 12, No. 1 Go, Lovely Rose!, Op. 24, No. 3 Fair House Of Joy, Op. 12, No. 7
During the interval I had a nice ice cream and orange juice. For the next part of the concert Bryn sang seven German Lieder songs. But first of all he told us the game was tied up 17-17 and we all cheered. These next songs really showed off his operatic voice and no wonder he is regarded as the best Welsh singer at present. Schumann Die beiden Grenadiere, Op. 49, No. 1 Widmung, Op. 25, No. 1 Du bist wie eine Blume, Op. 25, No. 24 Mein Wagen rollet langsam, Op. 142, No. 4 Bryn left the stage and when he came back he said France was leading 27-25. Schubert Auf dem Wasser zu singen, Op. 72 Litanei D343 Die Forelle D550 When Bryn came back onto the stage after this set he had a sad looking face and said that France won 27-25 and we all moaned. ( In fact the final score was 27-22). The last set of songs was of a Celtic nature. Loch Lomond was great and he got us to sing at the end of the song (I'll take the High road and you take the low road etc) and at the end we had to all stand to sing the last part of the song. It was fun and he rated us 7 out of 10. Bryn did comment that he thought that the Town Hall had one of the best acoustics of any venue he has sung in and we all cheered. Passing ByDanny Boy very well sung. Ar Hyd y Nos (All through the Night) Molly Malone we all sang the chorus with Bryn. Bryn was sent off with a standing ovation. The first encore Bryn sang was If I can Help Somebody (Androzzo) The next encore was some German opera song in which Bryn grabbed a rose from a floral display and walked around the audience and stopped in front of different ladies and threw rose petals over them while the audience laughed. Bryn is certainly an entertaining performer. We got him back for two more songs. The first was a Welsh folk song Suo Gan which he did unaccompanied. And lastly a very comical version of Big Brown Bear (Zuccaman). The concert finished at 10pm and it was a very enjoyable concert. Bryn is certainly a very classy opera singer and I was glad I didn't stay home to watch the rugby

Martin It's fascinating seeing her so young and realising how much she has grown, yet even then so extraordinarily mature for her age--just like Faryl at the present time. By the by, was that Sophie presenting Hayley with her bouquet? Peter S.

Hello Dave! I've found Keith's review of the Faenol concert HERE. Richard A good reminder of those magic early days, Richard. It re-wakens that initial excitement of the first time of meeting with her. I never thought I would and so, during the interval of my first concert I attended, i insisted on shaking hands with Gerald as i thought that would be as close I would ever get to her. Peter S.

Hello Dave! I've found Keith's review of the Faenol concert HERE. Richard Thank you Richard and hello again everyone! I have now completed the restoration work and I've posted links to the Faenol Festival 2003 videos in that very old thread that you mentioned: Hayley at the Faenol Festival, Wales, A ReviewAny further discussion about it should, of course, be limited to that Faenol thread, thanks! Starlight Express Westpac Trust Stadium Christchurch 14th July Musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber
The musical started at 6:30pm so that a lot of kids could go it too. It is a great musical to attract kids and newcomers to musicals.
For those that do not know this musical it is about a young boys dream of a train race between different engines and their carriages. All the singers are on roller skates and in fancy train costumes. I had a cheap seat near the stage but I couldn't see the stage very well but could see the extended stage they used as a track. But luckily the stadium wasn't full and so I shifted to a better seat half way up and side on to the stage so I could see everything ( and saved a lot of money at the same time lol).
I enjoyed this musical. It had good singers, dancers and they could all roller skate (no accidents). The costumes were excellent as was the stage lighting. The two songs I liked the best was I am the Starlight and Only He. I got a great programme as well with lots of good pictures. For the finale we had to do a lot of clapping but it was well worth it. So this was definitely the fastest paced musical you would ever see with lots of stunts and jumps.

Mama Mia! Westpac Trust Stadium Tue 15th Sep
I was really looking forward to this musical as I love ABBA and their music. I even liked the Mama Mia movie which I have a DVD of. So to see the original musical with an international cast was a dream come true and I wasn't disappointed. I arrived at the stadium just before 7pm and got a program which was full of information and kept me occupied until the musical started at 7:30pm. My seat was in the centre near the back in the raised section so I had a good view of the stage but too far back to see each performer's expressions etc. But the sound was great. There was a small orchestra just below the stage. The stage props were pretty simple and by turning them around and adding different furniture each scene was very easily and quickly created. This was an international cast and I was impressed by the lady who played Donna. Her name was Jackie Clune, she has appeared in many musicals and TV series. But the rest of the cast were excellent as well. The musical lived up to my high expectations and was full of drama, comedy and great music. During the interval I had my obligatory ice-cream and also the Waterloo cocktail which came in a glass which had a light in the base which came in handy during some of the songs in the second half. The musical really comes alive in the second half and the audience became more involved waving their glasses, clapping hands and singing along. I just loved it when Donna sang my favourite ABBA song The Winner Takes It All. Other great songs were Voulez-Vous, Chiquitita, Dancing Queen, Does Your Mother Know. It was great also to hear songs that didn't appear in the movie like Under Attack. The best part was when the musical ended and they did the encore like in the DVD. Almost everyone in the audience was either dancing, waving their hands, clapping, waving the lights or singing (some probably did all of the above). I waved my light and sang lol. Of course they did Dancing Queen and Waterloo.
IMO this is the best musical I have been too especially of the modern era ones so I reckon everyone should see this at some stage to get a great ABBA experience.
