This musical is so cheesy that it is great!!!!

I was fortunate to see the original London production back in 1999 and have seen it again since. I have deliberately avoided seeing the film as I do not want to shatter my memories of the wonderful stage production.

The Magic Flute by Mozart- Isaac Theatre Royal Christchurch 6th Oct

My second event in 2 nights ( first was Il Divo). I was in the cheap seats tonight with my seat being in the back row in the upper gallery. I was so high I was almost suffering from lack of oxygen lol. The Theatre Royal is a grand old opera theatre and ideal for holding operas which in this case was performed by the highly accomplished Southern Opera.
Mozart's The Magic Flute is full of comic entertainment involving fairy tales, monsters, good versus evil, love and Masonic references.

Although the cast was dressed in the period of the 18th century there are more modern props used in this opera to give it a more modern appearance, also the opera was sung in English ( so I could understand the words this time lol ).

The first Act opened with 3 very cute young monsters ( looked more like dinosaurs ). Then the mother monster came on (very big and menacing) which of course was killed. A more modern interpretation occurred when Papageno ( the Bird catcher) appeared in a flying machine (like a WW1 plane with a spinning propeller ) and landed on the stage. Papageno was the best character in the opera being very comic ( in the programme it said he was like a Homer Simpson ).

The three young boys were very good in this opera and were good singers ( one was actually a girl).

The temple in the opera was more like a Space Ship giving it a Star Wars like feel to the opera. The inside of the temple consisted of different levels. The lower level contained a control centre with sets of lights and TV screens (which worked). The upper level contained the cell that the Prince Tamino was held in and next door was where Princess Pamina was held.

Later in the second act Papagena arrived in the flying machine to be with Papageno.

So I loved this opera as it had humour as well as great music and singers.

Last Night At The Proms - Royal Albert Hall

Firstly I must say how grand the Royal Albert Hall looks and it looked great decked out in the Union Jack flags.

Secondly HaHa no I was not there personally. I was back in Christchurch, NZ in a local movie theatre today seeing the BBC broadcast of the Proms. It was probably the next best thing to being there with the big screen and surround sound. But it must have been the longest movie I have been to with it lasting 3 hours 20 minutes with a short interval. Luckily I took with me a large bowl of Flat White coffee and my usual icecream.

The highlights for me in the first half was the singing of the very classy mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly and the very beautiful Alison Balsom playing the trumpet.

Sarah was great singing Dido's Lament. Her 6yo daughter was also in the audience.

Alison was great playing the Haydn Trumpet Concerto in E flat major.

I also enjoyed the last song in the first half which was Villa-Lobos Chôros No.10, 'Rasga o Coração'.

During the interval they showed some of the guests at the 5 outdoor venues ( I didn't realize that there were outdoor concerts being performed at the same time as the proms). One of the performers was Katherine Jenkins. Also playing her violin was Nicola Benedetti.

After the interval the pomp and circumstance part of the Proms came to the fore.
It started with Arnold A Grand, Grand Overture. Also involved with the orchestra was 3 vacuum cleaners and Sir David Attenborough on a floor polisher, he was very good. Also there were four shooters with shotguns which at the end of the overture shot the cleaners lol.

Piazzolla Libertango performed wonderfully by Alison.
Gershwin, arr. Barry Forgie Shall We Dance – 'They can't take that away from me' performed by Alison and Sarah.
BBC Proms Inspire composers Fireworks Fanfares This was composed by young teenagers and was performed by Alison and all the percussion and Brass sections of the different orchestras at the RAH and the 5 outdoor venues and was very well done.

Handel Music for the Royal Fireworks was another great piece with the different outdoor fireworks shown at the same time.

Now came the pomp and circumstance part of the Prom.
Arne, arr. Sargent Rule, Britannia! This was excellent. Sarah came out in a Nelsonian Naval Uniform complete with telescope. I like how the audience belted out the chorus (the British are great at singing patriotic songs). During the song Sarah pulled out her sword and it turned into a Union Jack lol.

Parry Jerusalem Another great patriotic song.
Elgar Pomp and Circumstance March No.1 (Land Of Hope and Glory) was the masterpiece of the Prom with the audience bobbing up and down, excellent.

The Prom finished with The National Anthem.
Then the audience and the choirs performed Auld Lang Syne.

Boy I wished I was there.

This hour long concert was to showcase the talent of the students at the University School Of Music. And yes appearing as part of the Ensemble was our Sophie Westenra i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif.

Some of the students are very talented and you can tell that Dame Malvina Major has played a big part in their tutor-age. One in particular is Polly Ott who is in her final year and has a great future ahead of her.

Coca Cola Christmas In The Park Sat 28th Nov 2009

Yes Christmas is just around the corner and it was time for the annual Christmas concert in Hagley Park, Christchurch.
Although it rained most of the day by the time of the concert at 7:30pm the weather though cold was at least fine and the ground was dry.
It didn't put a lot of people off coming to the concert and at least 80000 were there all rugged up.
My arrival for this concert didn't start very well when I locked my keys in the car and I had to wait for AA to arrive to open my car.

This concert is a great way of showcasing new talent. And a long time ago now it was here that I first saw our Hayley sing and was the reason I started following her and bought her self-titled album when it came out the following year. Also to show at these concerts were Yulia and Will Martin. This concert and the Auckland concert are shown on TV 3 in December.

The first half of the concert were Christmas songs by various artists and the Coca Cola dancing kids and other dancers.

One of the songs sung was O Come O Come Emmanuel which although was good it really showed how great Hayley's version is in her new album.

I wish Hayley was here at this concert. I bet her album sales would take off if they had heard her at this concert and on TV. But I suppose Hayley cannot be everywhere at once. Maybe we need to clone Hayley lol.

After the interval the songs were more general pop. Although Santa did arrive on his sleigh.

The Surf Life Savers was the charity for this year and that is why they are pulling Santa's sleigh and not the reindeer.

The finale was a fireworks display to the tunes of Micheal Jackson.

Well, at least Ross you belonged to the AA. Think of the hassle involved if you hadn't been!
And the expense!

Interesting hearing how things are having Christmas in summer time. Seems to me so weird.
