AS I was watching Britain's got Talent I was thinking about how so many less talented people than Hayley gained fame and fortune. It's the same story in the U S with American Idol. So I thought it would be interesting to quiz the HWI members for their opinions.

Hey Richard or Roger, Can you help me modify my poll I originated. I thought it would take more words and it ended up truncated.

Hi Larry, Although I would be able to edit your opening post, I regret I am not able to amend the details of the poll itself. Unfortunately, the software doesn't allow any modification once the poll has been set. If you wish to clarify the options, I can only suggest you repeat them by replying to the thread but, as Grant says, they are probably understandable as they are. Excellent idea for a topic! Of course, Hayley did enter many talent contests at an early age but most of them were not televised (as far as I know). According to her biography, she didn't always win. Edit - It seems Richard and I were posting at the same time! Moderators are like the London buses. Ya don't see one for ages and then two come along!Roger

I just deleted my previous post before Roger edited his! The reason some of your answers are cut short is because the maximum length permitted is fifty characters. Richard

Perhaps I should have been more specific about the talent shows. I was referring to the one that are airing now.

The answer I would have given is not listed in the poll. And the title says what if she had WON, so we have to assume that. Also, are we taking about a NZ or a UK talent show. I would think that international stardom would be much less likely for the winner of a NZ show than a UK one. But if what happens to most TV talent show winners ran true to form, she would have has a big hit with one song, and a year later be pretty much forgotten. These shows are good for 15 minutes of fame, not a long term international career. Only a very small handful of TV talent show winners are still around say ten years later.

It's a fun poll not the Spanish Inquisition I read it that winning a talent "show" is not necessarily winning the overall competition and voted accordingly. Don't try to pin it to a particular country either, you'll give yourself a headache! Best wishes Grant

Grant, No I certainly didn't mean to start another Spanish Inquisition. Thanks for your support. You're right-it's just for fun.

Hello again Larry! I've just realised that your second option is not applicable to the poll question as written, but it's received four votes so far. Anyway, I doubt if winning a TV talent show would have made any difference to Hayley's career in the long run, so I voted accordingly. Richard

Very astute observation, Richard.I was wondering if any one would catch that. You must have been good at trick questions in school.

Hi Larry, To use a British expression the UK audience is very 'fickle' Or to put it another way, there is no guarantee that Hayley would have won the UK contest ! Talent is not necessarily recognised and rewarded. Best Wishes, Graham
