Both on record and in concert Hayley has used various instrumental arrangements for her songs. By now many of you will have personal favourites. This poll is meant to sample opinion about what works best for her.
Please take this poll or add your extended opinion as you see fit.

Hi Steve,
As far as backing goes with Hayley it really depends on the song she is singing. For example, when Hayley sings Sonny she is accompanying herself on the (piano, keyboard) and other songs where a guitar or violin and piano may be all that is needed. I think the best demonstration of this is Hayley's DVD “Live in NZ” where some songs sound brilliant with full orchestra and others as mentioned just small backing.
So, really Steve this is rather a hard poll to vote on IMO.
What do others think?
cheers,

I agree that it varies song by song. However, if Hayley were to sing with only one type of backing, I think the one that would go best with most of the songs would be strings and piano (or, I believe, guitar).
Needless to say, I find the songs beautiful with any backing!

It depends on the song. I wouldn't say no accompaniment at all, because that makes it hard to be in rhythm.

... it really depends on the song... I agree that it varies song by song.... It depends on the song.... I get it. It all depends on the song, but what I am also hoping to learn is which backing suits her voice the most, in your opinion. You may love the overall effect of a song, but surely you can think of a specific time when the right backing (or lack of) truly complemented her unique sound, as though it were tailor-made for Hayley.

It is Hayley. It will therefore succeed! Peter S.

Don't quite look at it that way, Steve. I gave you a response a little earlier but since then I've been directed to Youtube and she's singing with just Andy's guitar. 1. My reaction is that it is all very subjective, not just according to the song but also the moment and that indicates the listener's subjectivity which raise the question. 'Can anyone, even the pros, be really objective in their opinions?' 2. I said in response to your questionnaire that I went for her a cappella but hearing her with Andy says I enjoy that too. What that experience makes me say is to confirm her singing a capella but a light background adds a little extra colour while seeming to retain the a capella effect. Gosh, I suddenly can't spell! 'capella' (original Latin) 'cappella' modern Italian. No, I didn't just remember, it bothered me, so I looked it up! Groves uses two 'p's Peter S.

Hi All,
Yes I agree it depends on the song. I love to hear her sing a capella, and that is what I voted for. But I love her voice whatever the accompaniment.
Like you Peter, I love her with just Andy's guitar, as on "I know you by heart" which to my ears is absolutely stunning. I think acoustic guitar would be my second choice
Of course, vocal accompaniment is another thing that could have been in this poll.

Oh come on Graham. Jonathan's voice was never in the background and some of those duets were magnificent!

Well, Jonathan was certainly accompanying Hayley. I have come across videos of Hayley accompanied by Jonathan. I have never seen one with Hayley accompanied by a harp. So the oprions need to be taken with a pinch of salt.
But I'm sure you know I was winding you up!
All the Best

Thanks Graham. Sue will love it, the Harp is her favourite instrument.
