And from LondonSE1.co.uk... The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh visited Borough High Street on Friday morning for the official opening of the new Royal British Legion headquarters at Haig House. Musicians from the Central Band of the Royal British Legion played a fanfare as the royal party arrived. The Queen met wounded serving and ex-service personnel and service families during the 45-minute visit. Beneficiaries of the Legion who were presented to the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh at Haig House include those injured recently in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as veterans of earlier conflicts. Prominent supporters of the Legion who were present at the opening included newsreaders Huw Edwards and Alastair Stewart, as well as with soprano Hayley Westenra who helped to launch the 2008 Poppy Appeal from Basra. North Southwark & Bermondsey MP Simon Hughes and Mayor of Southwark Cllr Eliza Mann were also present for the ceremony. "The Legion is not just about those who served in wars past but about campaigning and caring for current service personnel and their families," says director-general Chris Simpkins. "There has been a 30 per cent increase in requests for help from those under the age of 35 and the Legion has risen to the challenge of meeting their needs thanks to the public's support." The building, formerly known as Angel Court, was previously occupied by the Inland Revenue's special compliance office. Pupils from Charles Dickens Primary School were present to see the arrival and departure of the royal party.
Roger

Thank you Roger, that's another interesting high profile event for Hayley! If Hayley met the Queen again, I wonder how many times it is now? Quite a lot, I think! Cheers, Dave

If only we had known about this. I could easily have gone to Borough High Street this morning (it's just around the corner from London Bridge Station) and my little camera would have coped admirably on a bright and sunny day like this. But we didn't know! Roger

Hello again Roger and everyone! As I know that Alastair Stewart is an ITV presenter on the London local news programmes, I took a chance and recorded the ITV London local news this evening, even though I live nowhere near London. Well luckily, there was indeed a report on this event... the wonders of digital satellite TV! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifSo here is the report: The Queen opens British Legion's new London HQ (2m: 55s, 1mbps, 21MB, Windows media) If you like surprises, and like to know about Royal British Legion, watch the above full report in full, first. If you only want to see the surprise or if you've already watched the full report, you can watch a seven second extract... British Legion report - short extract (7 seconds, Windows Media) The commentary is brilliant! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifPreview? Oh alright then! Dave

But we didn't know! Roger Probably not well advertised outside the direct association for security reasons? I haven't checked for awheile whether the 'Court Circular' as advertised in the broadhseets is maintained as it once was for the same reason? Peter S.

I saw both videos, but what is the "surprise" supposed to be?

Thanks for the videos, Dave! Give us a clue on this suprise, yeah? Is it why Allister Stewart is laughing so loudly? The bloke in the glasses...it's not the Captain from 'Allo 'Allo ?
The woman in blue looks like former Labour cabinet minister Ruth Kelly MP.

Well there's no surprise really, not now. It was a surprise for me though as i didn't expect to see Hayley pop up in the middle of that short TV report, she's good at doing that though (in Basra too!) i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifOh, yes we discovered that The Queen joked about her grandsons, if you want to count that! Cheers, Dave

The Royal British Legion have posted a video of the opening of Haig House on YouTube. There's no commentary, but you can just hear Hayley talking in the background, and she makes a few brief appearances: www.youtube.com/watch?v=xV30c9-gEZgRichard
