At the present time it appears that the number of members in the HWI forum is 303. That is misleading, because several people have signed up more than once under different user names.
To illustrate this, I draw your attention to the two members who have birthdays today: sailorsgirl22 and light21. It doesn't take a genius to see that they are the same individual! One could go through the membership list and spot plenty of others with multiple identities also.
I think it's time to eliminate duplicate memberships and arrive at a true head count of our fellow forumgoers!

Hi Steve,
Actually, I'm not getting my brain around this. Yes, we know of trolls and spammers that have done that, and our moderators have acted quickly and efficiently when that has happened, but how does it harm anyone apart from that? I am absolutely sure that most of us here don't play games like that. But as long as those who do don't make a nuisance of themselves, why s it a problem?

Hi Martin, I know the admins and mods have bigger fish to fry than the odd multiple member (MM), but since they are so thorough at discouraging redundant topics and duplicate threads, I thought I'd give them a new challenge to tackle. It might even be fun -- all that detective work, ya know. Okay all you MMs -- and you know who you are -- your days are numbered!

Hi Steve, We do have a member review system (Roger's system) but it's worth mentioning that the most common reason for dual and occasionally multiple memberships is that a member has forgotten their member name and cannot even get to the re-set password screen or pm anyone, so it's perfectly innocent behaviour. Each case has to be looked at separately but because of Proboards software limitations, it is not always advisable to delete a duplicate member. But If no harm is being done, there is no rush anyway... there are often more urgent matters to attend to (as today - behind closed doors ). Cheers, Dave

I hope you don't delete members because they are inactive. Sometimes I don't post here at all for about 6 months until I post again. Even then, I might post twice, and not come back again for several months. I come and go like the wind. I don't know when I first came here. Back when Andy's site was open. This is my "second account" too. I do understand why it's done though. It's very nice to have a "clean-up" and have accurate statistics.

Hi Nicola,
Yes, we do close accounts due to prolonged inactivity but, as Dave mentioned, each case is considered in accordance with Proboards software limitations in conjunction with our own requirements.
Ideally, I would like our membership levels to be an accurate indication of the current level of forum activity. Unfortunately, that is never likely to happen. All I can say is, it is far more accurate than the great majority of forums.
Steve, I am aware that we have a few duplicate accounts but, for various reasons, it would not be advisable to close them at the present time.
Roger

I looked over the membership listing and found another oddity: One can be registered in here for quite a long time and still be classified as a "new member". And it so happens that some "senior" members have less actual seniority than some "new" members!

Hi Steve,
It may seem like an oddity but the software is working in that respect exactly as it should. The membership categories are nothing to do with the length of membership. They reflect the number of posts made as follows:
0-49 New Member 50-99- Junior Member 100-249 Full Member 250-499 Senior Member 500+ Maestro

I hereby propose: 500-999 Maestro 1000-1999 Super Maestro 2000-2999 Super-Duper Maestro 3000-3999 Maestro of Maestros 4000-4999 Keeper of the Flame 5000+ Titan of the Forum (And this means Grant will soon be our next TOF!)

Hi Steve,
I suspect these categories or at least the levels at which they happen, are set by Proboards (somebody tell me if I'm wrong). I suspect what each level is called might be determined by the "customer" though!
As for Grant, I'll just call him a ten times Maestro! Or "Maestro of the Universe".

Hi Martin, With one exception, we are using the default settings for the category names and the levels at which they are attained. The one exception is that the default category for members who have posted 500 times or more is "God" which we changed to "Maestro". We could change the others or add more but we have chosen not to. I had considered changing the names to musical notes but that would make you a dotted crotchet and I would wish that on anybody! Roger

Hi Roger,
I think you did the right thing! I do not think of myself as divine or as a note. Mind you, I don't have any musical qualifications either, so maybe "Maestro" is a bit flattering, but I like it.
