Hayley sang the NZ National Anthem at the England - NZ Rugby match on Saturday 19th November 2005 - shown only on the UK satellite "pay TV" channel Sky Sports 2. This will have greatly refduced the TV audience size As we know, NZ have so far won every match when Hayley has sung their National Anthem (about 6 times, she said last week). But... England are the Rugby Union World Champions and with the match being in England, this was to be The All Blacks' and Hayley's greatest test to date. After crushing Wales and Ireland recently, the match against England was expected to be much closer and as tough a match as they come.... and so it proved to be!!! Here at HWI.net is a video of both National Anthems - the English one (second) being led by G4. Stay with it until the end because that's when you get the best view of a tiny Hayley leading G4 off the pitch. No close-ups were shown of Hayley or G4. Shame on Sky TV, they didn't have a single camera anywhere near the singers. The best available screencaps of Hayley are below. As I said NO close-ups were shown. Hayley standing on the white podium immediately behind the two flags. G4 are awaiting their turn on either side of the podium. Enlargement of Hayley (front right) leading G4 off the pitch after the Anthems. This is the best shot they showed! Oh... and the final result? England 19 - The All Blacks (NZ) 23Hayley maintains her 100% record. (even though I am English!!!) I bet The All Blacks hope she is singing for them on Saturday for their next match against Scotland. If she is, Scotland should be afraid... VERY afraid!!! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif Dave

Thank you for the video. I think it is strange that Sky TV didn't have a single camera anywhere near the singers but they have a single camera near all the rugby players.

Thanks Dave for the screen caps. Maybe Sky TV were having a spot-the-singer contest! G4 could have been mistaken for the refs too.

Forgive my ignorance. But, I thought the English flag is the Union Jack? Or did they not use the Union Jack because it was far too close to the NZ flag?

Thanks for the clip Dave! The sound was great, but I can't say the same about the picture! Never mind, we should get a better view of Hayley at St. John's, Smith Square next month! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifThree weeks to go! See you there, Richard

But, I thought the English flag is the Union Jack? Hello Portia! The Union Jack, or Union Flag to give it its correct name, is the flag of the United Kingdom of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The English flag is the George Cross, a red cross on a white background. You will notice that it is included in the Union Flag. Best Wishes, Richard

Thanks for the video and screen shots, Dave. What a shame that there were no close-ups of her. At least her name was announced clearly at the beginning. Is it my imagination or was 'God Defend New Zealand' taken at a slightly faster pace than usual? It sounded good anyway. Roger

What's more, the English George Cross and the UK's Union Jack are both included as part of of the New Zealand Flag! And, Hayley would have been quite entitled to sing the English and UK National Anthem, God Save The Queen. New Zealand has two national anthems – ‘God Defend New Zealand’, and ‘God Save the Queen' because The Queen of England is also the Queen of New Zealand (even though New Zealand is a completely independent Country). Cheers, Dave

psst.. Dave.. Union Flag if you please
A jack is something you raise up the Jackstaff..
And you're right about the anthems. God Defend New Zealand is actually known as the New Zealand National Anthem, whereas God Save the Queen is the National Anthem. It's commonly described this way around ANZAC Day parades..

Union Flag if you please A jack is something you raise up the Jackstaff.. ~Chris Hi Chris, yes I know technically it's the Union Flag but Union Jack is used more often to describe the very same thing; I used it deliberately. If you ask English people what it is, I think that most will call it the Union Jack. This has been so since my childhood - half a Century ago! Usage of the English language changes over the years and at a certain point, we have to change with it - or at least accept the validity of alternatives in common use - even if the technically correct answer is different (some would say out of date). www.askoxford.com/concise_oed/unionjack?view=uk This would make a great subject to debate under Off Topic! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifCheers, Dave

Hi, The video has now a permanent place on HWI.net - you can now also download it from this link: England v. NZI have one question left - I thought "God Save The Queen" is the UK national anthem - so isn't there a little discrepancy here between playing under the English flag and then play the UK national anthem. I also seem to recall instances in the past where for an English ocassion "Land of Hope and Glory" was played. Can anyone enlighten me on this? Cheers, Gerrit PS Dare I say it Dave - but now you are up to duadruple one posts

Cheers, Gerrit PS Dare I say it Dave - but now you are up to duadruple one posts Hi Gerrit, trust you to notice the 1,111 thing! But I'll soon fix that... Whoever started this English thing has a lot to answer for! I think the answer is this: "God Save the Queen" is 'a' National Anthem of England, and of Great Britain, and of the United Kingdom, and of New Zealand, probably a few other Countries too. The big difference between NZ and England is that NZ has another "official" National Anthem "God Defend New Zealand" and that is the Anthem most often played at puiblic events, not God Save the Queen. England has no other 'official' National Anthem but the unofficial one is usually said to be Land of Hope and Glory (but there are a couple of other claimants I think). In fact, after the two official anthems at Twickenham, the All Blacks then performed the Haka and England had Land of Hope and Glory played through the speakers... but it's unofficial. Oh, maybe I'll post a clip of these in a hour or so... their new version of the Haka was great! It is very confrontational and is NOT respected by the opposition fans - who were screaming their heads off at it! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifHere it is! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif (5MB). Thanks for uploading the anthems Gerrit! Dave

Hi Dave , thanks for the videos Rather rude of them not to film the people singing the anthems. Another great result though . Yeah Gerrit thanks for hosting the videos. Wonder if Hayley will come home to sing for us in 2011 i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifThat reminds me anyone heard anything of dates for NZ Tour,January.

Hi Dave, Many thanks for the additional video - I thought it was sensational. First of all, I thought the new Haka was much more artistic - I have never been able to like the old Haka - I simply associate that with tooo much unbridled male aggression - but this new version - it does have a real artistic flair about it. Let me say, it is unbridled male aggression properly bridled ... And I found the "Land of Hope and Glory" background very moving. The only proper description I can think of now is - the Haka was effectively bridled by Land of Hope and Glory ... Even if this still didn't show up in the final scoreline ... I'm just wondering, shhould the two videos be combined to one? Cheers, Gerrit
