Many thanks for that one Garrit and John. Hayley's impromptu version of the 'God Defend New Zealand' was devastatingly beautiful. It was especially nice that she sang the Maori verse. Roger Thank you. I agree that Hayley's performance is very beautiful. Raymond

Hi Dave, That early in the morning refers to Hayley singing, I presume? I am not a member of the forum at the official site, but feel free to post a direct link to the wmv there as well Peculiarly, there was no sign of Hayley at today's rugby match .... Cheers, Gerrit Thanks, yes I noticed Hayley's absence, too! However... nobody in the interview actually said that Hayley would be in Dublin today (although the BBC website does). They seemed happy to let us make the assumption, so I guess the moral is: don't make assumptions and don't believe everything you read on the Internet! Perhaps it was never planned at all... or the fire at the ground last night messed things up? I noticed that one end of the ground was completely empty because of the fire and I could see *no* singer on the pitch (although one was heard). England vs NZ is the big one next week, I do hope Hayley is there. I'll be rooting for England this time - but I don't suppose it will do much good if Hayley *is* there! Cheers, Dave

Hehe,
Maybe England should borrow Katherine from Wales for a change? I know that in the past, Katherine on one occasion sang both anthems in a Wales v. England rugby match ....

Good idea, Gerrit. Can England borrow from the Welsh team as well? Roger

Many thanks for the video John, and welcome to the forum. I'm sure you will enjoy being part of our happy family. That was a wonderful performance by Hayley on Breakfast Time, and I've had an idea. Would everybody be happy if the result of the England v New Zealand rugby match was a draw? If so, get Hayley to sing both National Anthems, then we'll see and hear twice as much of her! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifSorted! Richard

I am at last able to admit a terrible faux pas !
My daughter, Katie, phoned me to say that her boss was on GMTV on Friday morning. I saw his spot and then turned to BBC1. I heard the announcement thatHayley was to be interviewed in a few moments in relation to her being a "sort of mascot for the all blacks" !
I raced into the lounge to set up the video and set the thing to record. After the interview I dashed off to work and later in the evening sat back with smug satisfaction to watch the recording, together with Megan who had missed it. I sat there with horror and watched with disbelief 10 minutes of GMTV dross !! I must remember to set the channel as well.
Go on, have a good laugh. Good job someone else had the sense to do the thing properly !
Barrie.
Ps Go on Roger, tell me your secret ! Make me jealous, why don't you !! B

Ahh well, Barrie, these things happen to the best of us - especially when we are in a hurry . It does go to show - it's always good to have an extra iron in the fire Cheers, Gerrit

OK people, here's an audio versio of just the last minute - siomply because this has to be one of the best versions of the NZ anthem I have ever heard Hayley sing. John supplied this audio excerpt as well. www.hayley-westenra-international.net/hwi/clips/zo05/nzanthem111105.mpaIt has made me wonder really - both Hayley and Katherine performed their respective anthems at the recent Rugby match between Wales and NZ - and I thought Katherine easily outdid Hayley in the anthem stakes (even if NZ easily outdid Wales in the Rugby stakes). But in this rather intimate environment of the BBC Breakfast Show, Hayley's performance was one of the most powerful ones I have ever heard. I don't think she could perform better late at night, not if she was fully prepared for it. Maybe the intimate setting and the rather voluntary nature of Hayley's performance has contributed towards the quality of the performance. If this is a sign of the real Hayley, then please let's have more a capella (or at the most very sedate backcground music while she is singing). At least until such time that Haykey's voice has acquired the strength to compete with a more full orchestral accompaniment. Gerrit

Gerrit Hmmm... yes this was a very nice performance of the NZ Anthem especially considering the circumstances - on the studio couch! Not many singers can do that! But I disagree with some of your other comments. I thought Hayley's singing of the anthem at Cardiff recently was excellent... especially the second, English verse by which time she was getting warmed up. She seemed to "feel" the second (English) verse more and I noticed more of the NZ players singing then, too. In fact, I think she sang it (the second verse) even better than that excellent studio performance of the first verse! I don't understand your comment that Katherine easily outdid Hayley at Cardiff, partly because I disagree (!) and partly because you can't easily compare two completely different songs by two completely different singers with completely different accompaniments! Hayley could be heard clearly throughout, above the small NZ contingent of the crowd - but in some parts, Katherine was almost inaudible above the huge Welsh home crowd. My immediate reaction at the time was to marvel at how well Hayley did... especially in the English verse, here (500KB, windows audio file). The two performances were certainly very different but not comparable. Katherine certainly didn't "outdo" Hayley in the anthem stakes, unless by that you mean that Katherine and the home crowd had louder voices and Katherine showboated a bit, right at the end! Cheers, Dave.

Hi Dave,
I think that my comments are partly caused by the fact that I find the tune to the Welsh anthem more stirring than the tune to the NZ anthem..
But since I acquired Odyssey, I have had this feeling that Hayley's voice was lacking a bit of stir. But on the BBC Breakfast show, I found Hayley's singing stirring. In fact, I was pleased to find out that she could still stir my emotions by that early morning rendition of the NZ anthem.
That's of course my personal impression - it has been observed before that emotions raised by music are so very personal. Simply put, Hayley didn't raise any emotion in me when she sang the NZ anthem at the rugby match - Katherine did! And Hayley did raise quite a bit of emotion in me when she sang the same song a capella on BBC Breakfast ....
Cheers,
Gerrit

I don't really want to get too involved with comparing one singer to another. I will just say that I enjoy them both but, if I had to choose between them, Hayley would win every time.
