New NZ Idol Judge Announced
After months of speculation, veteran broadcaster Iain Stables from ZM has been selected to join Frankie Stevens on the NZ Idol judging panel this year.
Stables began his broadcasting career 14 years ago and has risen through the ranks to become one of, if not the best, well-known radio talents in the country. Currently the host of the Stables Afternoon Drive Show on ZM, his years of on-air experience brings a realistic commercial angle to the judging panel.
"I'm stoked to be asked to join the NZ Idol team," says Stables. "I have no idea why they chose me as I'm no Hayley Westenra. I can't sing or dance but after 14 years in this game when there is no right or wrong, there's what works and doesn't work. I know what works so I am just going to be me and say exactly what I am thinking so hopefully that will ignite a new element into the judging panel that contrasts the others."
Famous for his high profile pranks, cheekiness and ability to say what we're all thinking in his own unique, and at times, irreverent style, Stables is going to bring a fresh approach to NZ Idol.
"I'm not claiming to be able to dissect a pitch perfect performance or an overly indulgent trill but I know potential and if someone can actually sing. I do also know what works commercially and what the public will react to," says Stables.
"I will be looking for an entertainer with presence, charisma and confidence. NZ Idol can get your name out there and set up for a while but then you have to put in the hard yards to take it to the next level and that's where I think most Idols fall down and don't enjoy post show success. They need to be driven, competitive and passionate."
Iain Stables is the second judge to be announced in this years NZ Idol, he joins Frankie Stevens and another mystery judge to be announced very soon.
Frankie Stevens is one of New Zealand's best-loved entertainers with an international singing, acting and performing career spanning 30 years.
Stevens had a No. 1 hit with 'My Elusive Dreams' and has sung alongside Sammy Davis Jr and Shirley Bassey. He has performed around the world including London's Albert Hall. Stevens also appeared in the James Bond film 'Diamonds Are Forever', the television series 'Hercules' and the movie blockbuster 'The Matrix - Reloaded'.
