Hello Dave, HMV means HMV CD store. You can find some information here at wikepedia.org. HMV is not famous in the United States, right? I remember one of my American friends also ask me what is HMV before. Cheers, Raymond Edit: I fixed the link by hiding the full url. Richard

Hi Raymond,
Not sure about the US, but HMV is fairly popular in Canada. In fact, hmv.com used to point to the canadian version of HMV (now "powered by" amazon.ca). Compared to other music stores, it probably has the best selection.

Hi Dave G, HMV originally stood for His Master's Voice, one of the early record labels which, I believe, is now owned by EMI: The original HMV store in Oxford Street, London was opened by Sir Edward Elgar in 1921. I have heard it said that their store which stands further along that road is the largest record store in the whole of Western Europe. I don't know if that is true or not. I have also heard it said that it is Richard's second home (the first being the internet cafe round the corner)! Of course, HMV really stands for Hayley's Magical Voice. Roger

I don't think the US has any HMV's. There aren't any around here anyway. It's a shame because I really wish we had one.

A little research has revealed that there are a total of 588 HMV stores in a total of six countries. They are: UK, Ireland, Canada, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong. Their subsidiary, Waterstones, are also present in the Netherlands (Amsterdam) and Belgium (Brussels). Further information about the HMV Group can be found at www.hmvgroup.com/aboutus/Roger

Hi all, I have an interesting story to tell about 'His Master's Voice". Those of us in the US and who have an older TV or radio know of the RCA brand of home electronics. RCA stands for Radio Corporation of America. RCA and HMV share the logo of the dog (Nipper) looking into the gramophone. My dad worked in the RCA TV picture tube plant (my brother and I worked weekends there) so we have that logo all over the house...on plates, t-shirts, ceramic figurines, etc. Some more info... rcadog.tripod.com/rcadog.tripod.com/historyofnipper.htm

Thanks Raymond, for the information onHMV. I was always under the impression RCA was the inventer and owner of Nipper .It is very interesting the story of HMV. For many years Nipper has had a place on our piano listening to our music. Again thanks for the info. P.S.Thanks for the URL Richard.
