Hi All, Have deliberately steered clear of this thread as I didn't want to adopt a predisposed view of Hayley's book. We just got a note from Amazon Borders which told us Jan. 5th 2008 was the approx. delivery date. (rhymes but badly ) Have found no copies in Australia to this point. Graeme

Hi everybody! Just arrived in Manchester after a fabulous time in Southampton and Bath (thank you again everyone!). During a stop in Birmingham, I checked the latest issue of Classic FM magazine (with Andrea Boccelli on the cover) and there was a brief review of Hayley's book. Overall it is very positive - four stars out of five! Well-done Hayley and Darren. Stephany

Stephany That is surprising but perhaps Classic fm doesn't like to over-trumpet its own? Therefore I will start my view of the book so far. On Hayley’s bookWell, I’ve started. I could not resist. Having obtained her autograph on the title page at Bath—actually the half-title page as there is more room and to which she kindly added a kiwi—I now have great difficulty in putting the book down. As I said at the time the cover became available to us that picture is one of the loveliest I have seen of her. Her gorgeous, relaxed smile is the real, ordinary day-to-day Hayley. The pose seems to say, ‘Hi, you want me to talk to you? Okay, sit down with me and listen’. You open the cover and her Introduction is just as if she has sat down as in the picture and started talking. Her language structure flows with the naturalness of speech. Her words truly do fly off the pages and you sense her physical presence as if it is her voice in your ear. But… Okay, let’s get the negatives out of the way. What hits me immediately is her free use of two bêtes noires of mine. A light one, since many have been doing it for the last twenty years is to precede ‘but’ with a comma. Each does the same thing in its own right so the duplication is superfluous. The real bête noire is the contradiction of preceding ‘and’ with a comma. The purpose of the comma is to indicate a pause while ‘and’ is to bring together! I was particularly struck by this as I had recently received a Christmas card from an old school friend who wrote about meeting up in the new year and commenting that he hoped they would at least print the menu correctly. He was referring to the year before when we met up and he had pointed with a stage exaggeration of disgust to my bête noire in the menu. He was remembering our school days when, over the years of 13 to 18 we had chosen to spend a week of our summer holidays together, exploring London’s museums and art galleries. ‘I’ve never forgotten your voice booming through the galleries ‘Oh G--! Look at this!’ You were so incensed that the British Museum of all places should precede ‘and’ with a comma on an exhibit label. I’ve never forgotten it’, he said. ’It is marked indelibly on my mind’. So at least she is in good company with ample precedent! Her chapter One with the All Blacks is fascinating and the way she describes the effect on morale of the ‘lead-in’ process corroborates my own personal feelings about France banning live singing of anthems. Clearly, France believed that removing their ‘totem pole’ was the only way anyone could beat the ‘All Blacks’. I was sure at the time and remain sure now that the decision was made purely for that reason. Another aspect in Chapter One is her likening an experience to ‘out of the body’ one. She could have used ‘surrealistic’ but she didn’t. She chose to express herself this way. I think we have always maintained that Hayley is a very spiritually aware person. In fact I can see several facets coming together from diverse sources at the Bath Forum but more on that later, perhaps as a new thread. Oh boy, how very interesting. My previous comments here in various threads that I loved the name of ‘Hayley’ because of being hung up in my youth on Hayley Mills is the very reason she was named ‘Hayley’—her parents had the same fascination for the actress. As for Chapter Two, I can only comment that this ‘dream child’ did indeed have an idyllic, almost fairytale childhood which surely is one of the main reasons Hayley is as Hayley is. Peter S.

Hi Everyone Is there any way of knowing how many copies have been sold to date?
I am sure numbers will increase further in NZ as a result of Hayley now being back home but it would be interesting to guage success so far.

Hi all, I just re-read Hayley's autobiography and it clearly says that 'Pure' is 18x platinum in New Zealand. Is it, really? Stephany

Hi Stephany, No it is wrong, Pure is 12 x platinum in NZ. It isn't the total number of platinim discs for all Hayley's NZ albums either. I suspect that Darren Henley asked Decca for the figures and they gave him the total platinums at the time for all Hayley's Decca (International) releases i.e. Pure 12 Odyssey 3 Treasure 2 DVD 1 -------------- Total 18 But there are another 5 to add for Hayley Westenra and 2 for My Gift To You making 25 If he'd asked me, i would have told him! Cheers, Dave

No offense but Mr Henley seemed not to have done his job too well- there seems to be more than this one mistake in the book. The others are pretty minor ones like typing mistakes though, so probably all of us won't mind.

No it is wrong, Pure is 12 x platinum in NZ. Thanks Dave. Oh well, hopefully when we read again 'In her own voice' in a few years time, it'll no longer be a mistake! Cheers, Stephany

This is from the Daily Post (New Zealand): [/color] Treading Water by Rob Hewitt and Aaron Smale (Huia Publishers, $30). How to face death and loneliness for 75 hours in the sea off Kapiti Coast - an incredible tale of mind over matter. Searching For Schindler by Tom Keneally (Random House, $49.99). Keneally's book Schindler's Ark was the basis for Oscar-winning film Schindler's List. This book is a funny, weird tale of persistence - to expose the caring, sharing side of Nazi Oskar Schindler.
