Hi folks, I have had an email from the Moderator of Radio "Murski val" in Slovenia with the following piece of news: "I'm very pleased to inform you that Hayley Westenra's Pokarekare Ana became the Song of the Year by the votes of the listeners of Radio "Murski val" from Murska Sobota, Slovenia, Europe. This song was selected as the best Song of the year among 25 songs. Every week our listeners choose the song of the week and at the end of the year all these songs participate in the great finale."

Hello again Keith, I've just found this thread.
I bet it was Hayley's voice that made "Pokarekare Ana" the Song of the Year, rather than the song itself.
I can remember Rolf Harris singing a version in English when I was still wearing short trousers!
Do you like the words I've just added to my signature?
See you at Olympia,
Richard

I can remember Rolf Harris singing a version in English when I was still wearing short trousers! See you at Olympia, Richard Hello Richard, Now that is interesting. The first time I heard Hayley singing “Pokarekare Ana”, I thought I could remember a version by Rolf Harris. It was so long ago that even he would have been wearing short trousers! Anyway, subsequent research failed to confirm that he ever recorded it. I wondered if I had confused it with another song which he certainly sang. It was similar in style, had a similar melody, and even its title, to the uninitiated, was similar. It was called “Carra Barra Wirra Canna”…. Or something like that. However, since you mention that he sang “Pokarekare Ana”, I now wonder if my initial thought was correct after all. Can anyone confirm? Yep, see you at Olympia, Richard. Roger

Hello Roger!
I can't be sure of the date, but it was some time in the 1960s or 1970s. The song was called "Hurry Home", and can be found on a compilation of Rolf's biggest "hits"! I recognised the tune as soon as I first heard Hayley's version. Rolf sings different words, but he does sing one verse in Maori, starting with the words "Pokarekare Ana".
Perhaps Hayley could get her own back by recording "Tie My Kiwi Down Sport"! No, I'm not going to suggest it in the "Songs for Hayley" section!
See you at Olympia,
Richard
