Hayley Westenra's official websiteJohnDD: What music do you enjoy listening to at home?
Hayley Westenra: Hello JohnDD - At the moment I'm enjoying John Legend, Aretha Franklin and James Blunt.
Dominic: What did you splash out on first when you received your first big pay cheque?
Hayley Westenra: Dominic - I'm quite sensible so I always try to save any money I earn, but I did splash out on a really nice pair of jeans which I wore every day for a whole year!!!
Vicki: Hi Hayley. You have the most amazing skin! Is it down to good genes or a special beauty regime or a bit of both?
Hayley Westenra: Vicki - Thank you! I do try and look after my body. Mainly for my voice because your voice reflects your body's health. But I guess it also has a knock on affect and helps my skin too. I drink plenty of water and a lot of fresh fruit and veggies!
Craig: Hiya Hayley. You have such a great voice and you seem really cute, just wondered if you have a boyfriend at all?
Hayley Westenra: Craig - Hey, unfortunately not at the moment as I really don't have the time. I'm way too busy singing and travelling around the world.
danapeter: Hi hayley! I love your voice, I write songs myself, what advice do you have?
Hayley Westenra: Hello there, If you also sing I would encourage you to go out and perform the songs you've written and build yourself a profile. Go for any opportunity that comes your way and stay true to yourself...
Edie: Hayley, you have a beautiful singing voice, especially in Maori, but where can I get English translations of the Maori songs you sing?
Hayley Westenra: Hello Edie - the best way is through the internet. Hopefully you'll have some luck!
Alice: Hello Hayley - I just wanted to say that I find your music very theraputic to listen to - do you often find that people say this to you?
Hayley Westenra: Hello Alice - I do actually - The majority of my music is very easy listening and quite pure in terms of the production.
Ki Ora Hayley. Glad to hear you have a new album coming out - are you touring the UK again?
Hayley Westenra: Ki Ora! I am actually, I am doing a show in London at St James' Church, Piccadilly this Thursday and touring all around the UK in November doing more intimate shows with just a piano and violin backing. I really can't wait!
Paula: Do you ever get homesick and just want to go home? What do you do to overcome it?
Hayley Westenra: Hi Paula - I have adjusted over the years to spending so much time away from home. But every now and then I do get pangs of home sickness. I'm always on the phone to my family and emailing my friends which helps.
danapeter: Which singer from the past do you feel has most influenced your style?
Hayley Westenra: Hi Danapeter - There really is no 'one' singer that has really influenced my singing style. As I was growing up I listened to a number of different singers of all different styles and found my own identity. My singing is very instinctual.
Sami_Jo: Good Morning Hayley. Do you think that charity work is the way you would like to go as well as your musical career?
Hayley Westenra: Hi Sami-Jo: I really think that my singing career can go hand in hand with my charity work and I hope that as I progress as a singer, I can also progress as an ambassador for Unicef and a patron for the Raukatauri Music Therapy Centre in New Zealand. It's a great feeling giving back to the community as I have been given so much.
Kevers_placebo: Hi, i sent a message earlier regarding your cover version of Wuthering Heights. I Just wanted to ask If Kate Bush has influenced you in any way?
Hayley Westenra: Hi - I discovered her music just over a couple of years ago and since then I have become a huge fan of her and she has definitely become an inspiration to me.
Lauren: Hi Hayley, I'm only 10 and I really like your music. Where do you go on holiday?
Hayley Westenra: Hello Lauren! Shouldn't you be at school?? Well, usually when I have time off I like to go back home to Christchurch, New Zealand - my home city. But I also enjoy going to sunnier spots such as Greece - which has become a firm favourite! There are also many Pacific islands surrounding New Zealand which I'm keen to check out...
Sarah: Hey - what do you do to help yourself relax?
Hayley Westenra: Sarah - I usually just like to stay in and watch a bit of TV or catch up on all the goss in the celeb magazines. I'm pretty boring really! Sleep is always another option! Quite a luxury really.
Bluefairy: Hi Hayley great to meet you. Gorgeous song and what a voice you have girl. If this is the only question I ever get to ask you: Do you believe we each have a path set out for us in life, if so where can you see yourself going? Thanks
Hayley Westenra: Bluefairy - I believe that some things happen for a reason but we still have control over our life and can direct our lives to a point by the decisions we make. I'm still figuring it out myself! I just hope to continue singing and helping others around the world at the same time.
craigkachik: Hi Hayley, what are your hobbies, apart from singing?!
Hayley Westenra: Good morning - I don't have time for hobbies at the moment! I'm teaching myself guitar at the moment which I'm finding very therapeutic, although at times a little frustrating! But that's about it. Does TV and shopping count???!!
Rosie: I think you should do a stage musical of Whalerider. It's a beautiful film and would work even more beautifully to music - you could sing the lead role. What do you think?
Hayley Westenra: Rosie - good question! Actually I believe that a musical has been made of the story and debuted in Auckland, NZ not so long ago. I would imagine that it would work beautifully and I hope to see it soon.
Sami_Jo: I would like to say that my 2 year old is a huge fan of yours Hayley. He won't sleep unless your album is playing in the background. Did you ever think that you might be an inspiration to the next generation yourself??
Hayley Westenra: Hi Sami-Jo - I would hope that I would be a good role model for the younger generation, encouraging young people to do something about the world and find ways of helping others. There's so much that needs to be done.
martin440276: Ata pai Hayley, maioha ki Ingarangi! Do you understand much Maori? I know a little - not bad for a Katimana!
Hayley Westenra: Unfortunately I only learnt a little at school - a few basic words and greetings and a number of myths and legends. I'm planning on learning some more to carry with me around the world!
Em: Hi Hayley. I'm going to Kenya to work with orphans in January whose parents have aids. I know that you are very into charity work and wondered what or who inspires you to help people who are less fortunate?
Hayley Westenra: Hello Em, Princess Diana was a very insirational woman but it's really the faces of the children and adults who need helping that inspire me to take action. I just recently got back from Ghana, Africa, which was a very moving and motivating trip for me. I'm sure your trip will be the same and I wish you all the best. Good luck!
Sue: Hayley - got to go finish hanging out the washing but just wanted to say, I'm a fellow Kiwi living over here and you are one of our finest ambassadors...Haere Ra Kia Kaha
Hayley Westenra: Kia Ora, thank you! I really am a true Kiwi and I will always stay close to my roots, I love flying the flag wherever I go.
