John Hurt announced as special guest at 90th Anniversary: Silence in the Square
Article Published: 07 November 2008
The Royal British Legion today announced double Academy Award nominee, Golden Globe and BAFTA-winning actor John Hurt will take part in a major commemorative event in Trafalgar Square on 11th November. 90th Anniversary: Silence in the Square involves a mass participation Two Minute Silence at 11am on Tuesday 11th November 2008.
People are asked to gather for 90th Anniversary: Silence in the Square from 9.45am where there will be a host of live performances including a reading of Do not stand at my grave and weep by the eminent actor.
With popular GMTV presenter Ben Shephard to compere the event, attendees will also be treated to performances by world-renowned soprano Hayley Westenra, Rolf Harris & the Fron Male Voice Choir, and Classical BRIT award winners Blake.
The event will close with an invitation to all spectators to place poppies in the fountains at Trafalgar Square in a symbolic act of remembrance.
Stuart Gendall, Director of Corporate Communications at The Royal British Legion, said:
“We are thrilled to have John’s support for Silence in the Square. This year marks the 90th anniversary of the end of the First World War and - as we think of the young men who lost their lives so long ago and, in turn, reflect on the losses today among those young people serving overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan - it is clear that the Two Minute Silence is still as relevant as ever.
“We urge the nation take the time to pause and reflect with us at 11am. And, we invite members of the public and those in offices nearby to join us in commemoration and remembrance at Trafalgar Square - even if only for a short time.”
