Errrr - Hayley, I think your arms are meant to be outside the jacket. Seriously though, I have nothing but total admiration for Hayley using precious relaxation time to visit the British troops in Basra and to provide continued support for the British Legion. Together with the recent trip to Ghana, Hayley's humanitarian efforts are highly commendable and there is no doubt that there is not a better role model for her generation. Martin

Thanks to Paddy for providing the link to the amazing photograph of Hayley in her bullet-proof vest. I managed to display it in Stuart's post by replacing the hyperlink (url) tags with image (img) tags. Richard Thanks, Richard, I'll remember the (img) tag. I think I had come across it before, but had forgotten it. Stuff (the imaginatively named NZ news site) has altered its Hayley story in later editions. In fact the Christchurch Press which puts out several versions has altered it. It now says this: They seem to have decided the bullet-proof vest is the most newsworthy part of the story. I wonder if the sobriquet "The Kiwi Songbird", will stick? I suppose it's not too bad. I think that getting some sort of nickname is a sign of recognition of someone as a major player, irrespective of how good or original the name is. Edited for grammar spelling -StuartJ

They interviewed Hayley on the lunchtime ITV news but the caption referred to her as an "Opera Singer !" Oh well ! Make sure those of you going to concerts in early November wear your poppy with pride as the lady requests !

Hi Roger and thank you for that excellent news! I am very relieved to hear that they are safely back on UK soil, though I'm sure they were very well looked after in Basra. I am also quite touched by the speed with which Kathryn let you know they were back. They couldn't have done much in an hour (except perhaps let family know first) and to think of HWI so quickly says an awful lot about the way we are thought of. I hope (if you have not already done so) that you will pass on the thanks and best wishes from everyone here for thinking of us at what must have been a time of quiet relief for everyone. Best wishes Grant

Hello everyone Meant to mention this earlier, but I bought my poppy this morning from a war veteran at Trowell motorway services. i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifI asked him if he had seen any of the coverage of the launch from Basra but sadly he hadn't. Told him that Hayley's rendition of "I Vow To Thee My Country" was very moving and heartfelt. He didn't know who Hayley was! He does now!! Best wishes Grant

And thirded. Am I alone in feeling uncomfortable that Haley, who I was with only last Saturday at Stoke, was in a place like that? I don't know why I should feel like that , but I do. It is a huge relief to know that she is safely back. Surely she need some rest now!

Am I alone in feeling uncomfortable that Haley, who I was with only last Saturday at Stoke, was in a place like that? No Martin, I feel the same. When I was looking at the picture of Hayley putting on the vest, the only thought in my mind was 'Oh my dear how could you still smile while you put on that heavy vest in that messy place.' But now she's back safe I think we can all lie back a bit. Somehow I think we worried more than the lady herself did. Tin

Tin I think she was taking the vest off in that picture (the caption on the MOD site mentioned her "undressing" from it). But your basic point holds, of course, although the part of the trip that worried me was the flying in and out of Bazra -- I think that might be when the vest was worn. That is what would frighten the blazes out of me -- being in that aircraft in and out of Iraq. At the actual base on the ground you may be relatively safe. (Although the key word there is "relatively".) I must say that I am very impressed that Bedlam contacted HWI too.

Good to hear that Hayley is back safely in the UK. Thanks for the links to the MoD sites which gives interesting access to images and video from the trip. Now I get back to looking forward to seeing Hayley performing again next month
