Hi everyone I'm not sure if this thread should appear here or on the Other Music board, but because it deals with Maori songs and Hayley sings some of them I thought it best to put it here. I was surfing around and came across this website: folksong.org.nz/waiata.htmlIt lists and gives details of almost 100 Maori songs. Even better, it gives examples of how many of them sound, either as computer-music renditions or as actual song samples. And it includes translations for many of them. Of course, Pokarekare Ana, Hine e Hine and E Pari Ra are there, though the age of the website means that Hayley's versions are not mentioned. But it does give some food for thought of what other Maori songs we might like to hear from Hayley. Of the ones I've listened to so far, I'd really like to hear Hayley sing Te Piriti ("Bridge between cultures"). Also, I was surprise to find that Now is the Hour is originally a Maori song called Po Atarau. If you like Hayley's Maori songs and the sound of the Maori language in general then I think you'll find this site worth a visit. Kind regards Colin

Yes, I've seen this site before, when looking up the translation for E Pari Ra. I'd love for Hayley to sing more Maori songs. I think she should sing at least one on each of her major albums. It's too bad she didn't put one on Odyssey, too, but there were a lot of songs piled onto that one! Thank you.

Hello everybody! I was in HMV the other day and found a CD of Maori songs recorded by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa in the late 1990s. One of the titles was 'Po Karekare ana' (three words). If you look closely at the site Colin linked to it confirms that this spelling is a mistake, and Dame Kiri is at least part Maori! Hayley's version is mentioned on this page: folksong.org.nz/pokarekare/index.htmlDon't miss the 'Goodnight Kiwi' video on this page: folksong.org.nz/hine/index.htmlRichard :zz

Hi Richard,
Yes, I have that album on a cassette tape. ISTR that Hine is there too. Neither comes close to Hayley's version, IMHO.
