Jonathan Ansell may perform with some of the world's finest opera stars, but singing with David Essex meant he'd really made it, in his mother's eyes.

It's a bit of a shock to discover that the Seven Irish Tenors don't all hail from the Emerald Isle, although British tenor Jonathan Ansell says his mother's family is from Ireland and he has spent a lot of time there and has been inspired by the music.

"There's a mix of us in the show, a couple are from Ireland and others have got connections through their family, but it's not a full Irish group."

Ansell formed the group G4 with three friends while at Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and the group was runner-up in the first X Factor UK television show. Ansell says he was encouraged to enter after hearing Simon Cowell advertising the fact it would be the first reality show of its kind to take groups.

"I've always wanted to push myself as far as possible so I rang the guys [the other G4 members]. We had been doing corporate gigs and busking and getting a good reaction. We didn't think we were going to get anywhere on the show because we were dramatically different from everything else. It was a massive surprise that we were so well received by the public," says Ansell.

The fact the classical singers looked like the wholesome sons of someone who lived down the road didn't hurt, nor did the fact they had good harmony and a broad range.
"My voice is so high and Matt's [Matthew Stiff] was so low and very powerful, so we had a good range. We played nice familiar music and we made opera less scary for those who were put off by the perception and stigma of commercial opera."

G4 went on to top the charts with three albums and four sellout tours. Ansell went solo in 2007, signing to Universal Classics and Jazz, and continued to top the charts with Tenor at the Movies and Forever. He was nominated for a classical Brit Award and has performed for the Queen.

Ansell says he has worked with some of the top opera singers, including New Zealand's Hayley Westenra.

"I had a solo duet with Hayley. It was great to meet her and record, it was a real delight. The purity of her voice - she has such a sublime tone, she's one of the best female voices for that in the world."

Ansell performed with Westenra in front of the Queen in November 2009 at the Festival of Remembrance and toured with her on the Valentine's tour."

I have also been on Ready, Steady, Cook with Hayley and I beat her. I think I did tea-smoked duck with oriental noodles. I love cooking."

Ansell is a real foodie and says he loves sourcing new ingredients and then whipping up a meal for friends and family.
"My wife doesn't like cooking. She is learning though. There are no big cooks in her family, although her mum is good at opening a packet of salad and tossing some prawns on it. My grandmother-in-law is a good cook and she is teaching her some basic recipes, but I have full rein in the kitchen and I love it."

Ansell also enjoys sea angling and was looking forward to heading out to catch some fish with friends while in Auckland.

"I'm also doing a cooking spot on a New Zealand television show, making fish cakes. I love cooking, I love being in the kitchen and being in charge."
Ansell's love of music was sparked by his mother's CD collection, which included works by opera greats Luciano Pavarotti and Mario Lanza.
"I loved Mario Lanza singing Be My Love but it wasn't cool to listen to that kind of music when I was growing up."
Today, Ansell says it's difficult to define what kind of music he likes listening to.
"I'm not very good at keeping up to date with things - my CD collection is embarrassing, there are a lot of things I'm trying to learn rather than listen to. Now, mostly I love finding cool things. I'm a huge fan of tunes and melodies and impossible vocals. Aerosmith, U2, Michael Bolton. Songs like Living on a Prayer. I've got to watch the speedo that I'm not going too mad. You're playing it loud in the car and you have to try and rein it in a bit. You'll be singing along and you get to the lights and you don't realise how loud you are outside the car."
In October, Ansell will team up with Westenra, Britain's Got Talent winner Phil Potts, CATS! star Ruthie Henshall, and 70s pop star David Essex in Nights on Broadway - The Best of the Musicals.
"David Essex - my mum got excited I was working with him, she thought I'd finally made it in my career," Ansell says.
Living in London, Ansell developed a love of musicals and dreamed of one day starring in a musical production.

"I always wanted to have the chance to tread the boards myself. I played The Man in Whistle Down the Wind, a less traditional role for me. The character, he's on the run from death row. It was exciting and daunting; I had to grow a beard for it. It was quite feeble at the start of the run but after a few months I had a substantial beard and I felt quite manly."
Ansell toured with the show for eight months and says he can see why actors enjoy what they do.
"It's very empowering doing the performances and I honed my craft on the road and was offered various other roles. I love that you're not just yourself on stage, you are portraying someone else."
Although typically classed as a "popera" star, Ansell says he enjoys mixing it up and singing different styles.
"I love the variety of things and the huge satisfaction of doing absolutely ridiculous styles no singer would do in the same lifetime, let alone the same set. Going from Somebody to Love to Nessun Dorma. It's an amazing transition - exhilarating for the audience, it's like having two artists on stage."

This is Ansell's first visit to New Zealand and he plans to see as much of the country as possible in between performances with the Seven Irish Tenors.
"Performing with them is a new experience for me but it's something I love.
"It's scary [joining a successful group] and I was definitely nervous in the rehearsals. They had a pre-existing comprehension of what I would be like but they soon realised I was just one of the boys. They are a great team with phenomenal voices and personalities."* The Seven Irish Tenors will perform at The Regent on Broadway in Palmerston North tomorrow night and at the Royal Wanganui Opera House on Sunday.

Pity the Nights on Broadway shows were cancelled. I feel more sorry for Jonathan than anybody. And it would have been good to hear him again.

When he sang the high notes the first time you could hear the audience gasp so I think they loved him too.

Jonathan is a bit different to the normal run of tenors. That's why I like him. And when he worked with Hayley, he seemed to bring the best out of her too.
I remember when he first duetted with Hayley, she used to duck out of competing with him in the final powerful finish to a song.
Then on the Valentines tour, she joined in and matched him. That was absolutely thrilling. I really do wish Jonathan well. He tries hard and deserves better than he is getting.
