NEW Zealand's Hayley Westenra is a young performer who has sold millions of records.
At only 15 her first album, the classical cross-over work Pure, was an outstanding success and heralded a new singing star to the international stage. She will be doing an instore appearance at Mall Music on Sunday at 1.30pm. Her new album, Odyssey, was launched last week.
As well as performing she will be signing copies of the new album, which she describes as being a more diverse body of work than her debut album.
On Odyssey she performs a duet of Dell'Amore Non Si Sa with Andrea Bocelli.
"It's called Odyssey because it takes you on a musical journey," Westenra said.
How does one so young handle this kind of hype?
"It's a bit embarrassing," she said. "I think it's important to stay close to people you trust - it keeps you grounded.
'Sometimes when I go for a photo shoot and there is a team of people around me make-up, lighting, clothing people . . . if they only knew I felt so ordinary. It's quite surreal."
She said her grandparents were a direct influence on her becoming a singer. They lived in Auckland (Westenra and her family were in the South Island) but when we visited there was always music playing.
"There was a lot of singing and dancing around the room," she said.
She is especially happy with Odyssey because she wrote one of the songs on the album, She also did all the arrangements.
Asked what she listened to, Westenra said she liked a variety of styles, depending on her mood.
"If I'm getting ready for a party I might listen to the Black Eyed Peas, but if I want to chill out I'll put something Celtic on," she said.
She's hoping to be back in Australia for a concert series at the beginning of 2006.
