The Christchurch Cathedral Choir Farewell Concert Thu 3rd July
featuring Dame Malvina Major
This was a farewell concert held by the choir before they head off to England. It was held in the lovely Christchurch Cathedral which has excellent acoustics (no need for microphones at this concert lol).
The choir is of mixed ages although most come from the Cathedral Grammar School.
The choir started with some 17th century hymns and then some 19th and 20th century hymns, including one composed by a 19 year old organ scholar for the choir who also played the organ in some of the hymns.
Dame Malvina Major was introduced to the audience by the choir director Brian Laws, who mentioned that Hayley and Will will join them at the St James Church concert.
Dame Malvina Major sang two Puccini arias Vissi d'arte (Tosca) and Un bel di (Madama Butterfly)
She sang them beautifully and was pure class throughout the concert.
She then sang with the choir Laudate Dominum (Mozart) which was excellent.
After the interval the older choir members sang Les petits troubadours (Paul Halley) and then the younger members sang Pie Jesu (Andrew Lloyd Webber).
The director said that the next 4 songs would be sung at the concert. It was from Songs and Sonnets Of Shakespeare (George Shearing) and had a jazz sound with a piano and double bass backing.
Live with me and be my love
When daffodils begin to peer
Who is Silvia?
It was a lover and his lass
Dame Malvina then came back and did 3 arias.
Ebben, ne' andro lontana (La Wally)
Barcarolle (Tales Of Hoffman) duet with Anna Argyle.
O mio babbino caro (Gianni Schicchi) one of my favourites.
The choir then did some modern songs
Nightingale
Somewhere over the Rainbow
and Quanta qualia (Patrick Hawes) which is one of my favourite Hayley tunes. So I hope the next piece of news will please the St James concert goers in that the choir director hopes that Hayley will join the choir in singing this song at the concert.
They then finished with My beloved spake (Paul Halley)
Then Dame Malvina joined the choir for the finale Vilia (Franz Lehar). It seemed appropriate that as they sung this song the lights flickered , thunder could be heard and then heavy rain started. It seemed the weather gods were farewelling the choir on their 4 week trip to England.
