I am new here and wanted to say hi! I also have been puzzling over the following matter and wondered what others thought on the topic…
When I first got Hayley’s CD PURE from the UK in 2002, I was impressed with the production, new material, and other song selections -- especially loved that she covered Kate Bush’s “Wuthering Heights”. When the CD was re-packaged with a bonus disc, I again thought how cool it was that she covered Loreena McKennitt’s “The Mummer’s Dance”?
I thought the song selection on ODYSSEY was a little less interesting, but I still liked it. Then I started to notice the different variations on the track listing by country. Then when TREASURE/CELTIC TREASURE was announced, the track listing sounded even less adventurous (“Danny Boy”, “Shenandoah”, “Santa Lucia”), and again it varied from country to country. Don’t get me wrong, I liked them both a great deal, just not as much as I liked PURE. And I figure that Hayley is still young, and has plenty of time to get more adventurous in her music or song selection, something I hope she will do over time…
So my question is: are Hayley’s albums thought out as “whole albums”, or are they just songs that are strung together? To have songs dropped or added, makes it seem as if the CDs are just random collections of songs, something I didn’t feel with PURE.
As a 50-year-old music fanatic, I can’t imagine, for instance, what Joni Mitchell’s BLUE, Carole King’s TAPESTRY, Kate Bush’s HOUNDS OF LOVE, or any number of other classic albums, would be like with alternate track listings! Anyway, I’m just trying to get a feel on this issue, and maybe it just doesn’t matter so much to the “younger generation” (I can’t believe I just wrote that) which is raised on itunes and downloading – maybe my old-fashioned notion of an “album” is obsolete!
As for me, I’ve decided to go with the Japanese versions of ODYSSEY and TREASURE; with the addition of CRYSTAL AND PRAYER, I feel like I have the majority of Hayley’s recordings all in one place! I am also really looking forward to her upcoming album of Japanese songs – this sounds like it will be an interesting project!
