Just had a great evening at New Brighton Beach in Christchurch watching a fireworks display on the pier. Funny how New Zealand still celebrates Guy Fawkes but I suppose we don't need much excuse to let off fireworks and and have bonfires. For the non English members, Guy Fawkes attempted to blow up the British Parliament buildings a few hundred years ago. Anyway the fireworks display is very popular and usually up to 100000 people head out to the beach or the Port Hills to watch it. I also listened to Will Martin's new album while I was waiting.

Hi Ross, how big was the crowd? according to The Breeze there was a good turnout. Did you get a good view from where you were? cheers, Rodders

Hi "guys" I'm sure a few more celebrations for Guy Fawkes took place round the world. BTW... the State Opening of the UK Parliament is today. Hayley would look lovely in the royal gallery in her red dress. Joe

Hi Ross,
Sounds like you had a great time, I am glad you enjoyed it.
For the last couple of years I have always traveled down to London to meet up with some friends and go to the fireworks display at Ravenscourt Park. It's usually a great night.
It hasn't happened this year though, I haven't actually been to a display at all.

... For the non English members, Guy Fawkes attempted to blow up the British Parliament buildings a few hundred years ago. ... So they basically celebrate an early terrorist? That makes about as much sense as anything, I suppose, in this crazy world. Is there also a "Jack the Ripper Day"?

Errrr.... no, Steve. It celebrates the foiling of the Gunpowder Plot. The triumph of the forces of Law and Order, if you like. Guy Fawkes was caught... he failed! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifRoss, I had no idea that New Zealand still celebrated it... wow! We had our celebrations at home (well my daughter's home - the garden is bigger!) and my grand children loved it! Cheers, Dave

Sounds like a very nice holiday! I know I'd love sitting on a beach in ChristChurch just about now. It would be beautiful! We don't have a holiday like that here... err...well, because the Brits actually got away with burning down our Capital Oh, God bless England anyway Cheers from your forgiving American cousin i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif, Peter Just had a great evening at New Brighton Beach in Christchurch watching a fireworks display on the pier. ...Yes, Guy Fawkes was "caught"... but there's more to it than that. Don't believe all you read in the history books.
