Libby, Yeah, I felt they created their own Eowyn for the film and kind of forgot what her actual role is. Eowyn is basically the woman who defies her entire culture in order to go to war because she feels it is her responsibility to do so. The girl should be a firebrand, not the wet character she is in the films. 'The White Lady of Rohan' has more guts than most of the men to do what she does. Miranda was far too vulnerable and weak-seeming to meet with my approval as Eowyn. She should be proud and fiery. *** Oh, rumour has it there may be a THIRD Hobbit film, BTW. More singing opportunities, if true!

Oh yes, Elliot. Any news you hear about the Hobbit, chances are I've already heard it too. i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif I follow The OneRing.net. So, did you see the new shot of Gollum and Bilbo on the front of the upcoming issue of Empire magazine? It's great! And I would love another Middle Earth movie. PJ must have seen the recent Boromir quote! :rollin But it sounds like they've been pondering it for a while, otherwise he wouldn't have commented so much about the possibility. I see what you're saying about Eowyn now. But I guess they were going more for the pining-after-Aragorn role more than anything else. And they stil had her fight the Ringwraith! Wasn't it actually Merry who stabbed him, but they make Eowyn do it in the movie? Looks like I have another excuse to watch the movie! I'm still reading the appendices, and there's a part about Galadriel in the attacks against Lorien and Mirkwood that I'd love to see on film!

You'll definitely know more than me, then! I missed that! I shall have to find it. Fortunately, I know where they are online! It's what they intend to do with it I'm interested in. There's a LOT that happens in The Hobbit, as you know, and three films could include absolutely everything... Yes. Eowyn should be by far the strongest female character in the film, as she is in the story. And yes, I'm pretty sure Merry stabs him in the back of the knee or something. Eowyn finishes him off, I think. Tolkien really was making a major point about the role of women in war with Eowyn (IE men couldn't win it without them) which is why the casting horrified me. I don't think Jackson understood either the character or the point of the character. Eowyn may be a minor character, but she's vital. The good guys literally could not have won without her. The White Lady of Rohan represents all women, in a way. She should NEVER be shown as weak! I don't think 'Galadriel the mighty sorceress' has been allowed to shine on screen... yet! Still hoping for Beren & Luthien one day, though. that would be amazing. That and The Children of Húrin, which was the latest thing Christopher Tolkien finished polishing up. Epic and a half!

Guy makes a compelling case! Good find, Libby There's certainly more than enough material in all that for three films, wherever the break points are.

Yes, I completely see why PJ and team decided to make 3. Did you know that the first script for LOTR was for one film?? And when the studios read it, they suggested they make it into 3, just like the books? The original script would've been terrible, because they would've had to leave out so much stuff!

Yes. Jackson finally went to New Line and suggested two films, IIRC, but the head of New Line was a Tolkien fan himself and outright refused, demanding that Jackson make three! Pretty bold when you think that they sunk pretty much all of New Line's money into it and the studio would have folded if it had flopped. As it was, the first film alone made back the entire cost of the trilogy, IIRC. Not to mention putting WETA (And New Zealand) firmly on the map for film makers. As for The Hobbit being three films, I suspect it has more to do with New Line realising they are running out of Tolkien films than anything Jackson wanted! Hopefully should give them time and leverage to get their hands on The Silmarillion... They'll never run out of great films once they get that thing! And tie Jackson & his team into lifetime contracts, of course!

Well, PJ said something about the tale grew in the telling, and then at the comic con, he joked about how long the movies might be. The theory is that they were worried that 2 movies would end up being way too long if they didn't cut stuff out, and they probably don't want to cut too much out! The more the merrier! Oh yeah, the recording of the score started today! You can see my musings about it in the States thread, if you haven't already. LOL

Hi there Libby.... Awhile ago you mentioned that you would like to see Hayley sing in the upcoming Hobbit movie....was I understanding that right? If so, is there now any chance that that might happen? That woulhttps://i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif be so AWESOME! I'm going to that movie anyway, but Hayley would just make it a nice bonus.

Yes, I have been hoping that for some time now. I even wrote some letters to Peter Jackson and Howard Shore (the composer) about it. I received a positive response from PJ initially, but that was long before they finally were able to start filming. My letter to Howard Shore himself was fairly recent, so it was probably too late for the first movie, if he even heeds my letter at all. I haven't received any response (I sent it over 3 months ago). However, we know that Howard liked Hayley enough to ask her to perform for a few of his LOTR symphony concerts! So, at least he's familiar with her, and I hope he still likes her enough to want to include her vocals somehow. He might not have kept up with her career after that, but hopefully my letter will help remind him of her extraordinary talent, if it needs doing. Of course, the ideal thing would be for her to sing a theme song for one of the films, but background vocals would be good, too. Enya had a song within the movie, as well as the theme song, so there's that possibility, too. It might depend on how much role the elves play in each film, and how much emotion and drama there is. The book itself is told in a fairly humorous way, so it might not seem like such songs would fit with the story, but it appears that there will be more elvish influence in the movies than was in the book. Then there's the emotional scene at the end of the story. So, there's more opportunity than one might think if you were just going by the book itself. There are supposed to be 3 movies, so that's 3 chances for her to be included. They've already begun recording the soundtrack for this year, and I've seen no indication that Hayley was, or will be, included this time. However, I'm not sure whether vocals are recorded at the same time as the orchestration or not. I have a feeling this is separate, but I could be wrong. I wouldn't give up hope until July 19, 2014 (the last movie comes out July 18, 2014)! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif Anyway, I'll be sure to let you know the minute I find out anything!
